I think during my fight last saturday I fractured my nose. I had hurt it sparring about two weeks before my match and I'm pretty sure this weekend did it in. It doesn't look noticeable, but the very tip of it hurts like **** with any contact whatsoever. It actually makes my left front tooth go numb if i press on the right side of it. I can't really breathe in or out of it either. My question is, if I fight this weekend, do I risk the chance of it being permanently messed up? My trainer wants me to take this fight, and I want to take it, but it's so early in my boxing career I don't need to risk anything permanent. I'm also getting an x-ray on thursday but I want your opinions...

well if its fractured obviously don't take the fight.... Only way your going to end up with something permanent is if you get a beating put on it while healing. So if you WERE to take the fight which I don't suggest doing... Keep your hands up:good

You obviously fractured it. If you take the fight, keep your hands up. I've had several fights where my nose has been mildly fractured beforehand, and the only problem that occured was that I usually started to bleed very easily. Once you get in the ring, you won't feel the pain, so no worry there.
But, you're saying you can't breathe out of it. That's not good at all, so you should definitely wait for that x-ray before you decide.
I wouldn't recommend doing it if you're much concerned for your looks either, I have two lumps of cartilage sticking out on each side of my nose-bridge.
In other words, it doesn't look very pretty. :D

It's not worth taking the risk. You'll have plenty of opportunities later on after it heals. It's just a match bout. Not only are you risking breaking it and messing it up permanently, you'll be preoccupied with it during your bout and you need to be focused on the fight, not on your nose.

Just wait and let it heal. Your coach should know better by the way, it's his job to protect you, not push you into a situation that could mess you up. That's ridiculous.

Amy, in defense of his coach, it depends on the situation. If you were in the Olympics going into the final with a fractured nose/thumb/hand, wouldn't you say **** it and give it your all?

Granted, it isn't the Olympics. So that defense is out the window. Silly coach!

In the scheme of things, 2-3-4-5 weeks for it to heal is nothing, mate. You can still work out fairly well just don't fight and **** that **** up.

He specifically stated that it was early in his boxing career. So it's not a tournament and he has plenty of time ahead of him to get more fights. He made a point of putting that in there. Yes, if it were a big national then it would be a different story. But it's not and it's not worth risking it and his coach should have the sense to know that.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to talk to my trainer about it today, and also to my doctor tomorrow. It will only be my 2nd fight, and I'm 19 so I'm not in any rush. I don't feel as though as I need my nose disfigured for a fight of this nature.

So i went to the doctor, and they said i had a hemotoma (sp?). I ended up getting surgery on it where they also found a fracture, and they made some cuts to remove the blood clotting. I have a splint in my nose to keep it compressed, and it hurts like **** even after popping a couple vicodin. I had a bunch of bouts scheduled but I am not supposed to take any face shots for at least six weeks. What are some good websites to watch boxing footage on? I figure if I can't train at all this week or go to work I should at least watch some good matches.
