No, since there were too many great trainers in the history of boxing for one to be considered the greatest.
If Eddie could teach a goat to hook off the jab, he’d have made millions taking that show on the road.
No but he’s in the discussion. Picking a “best” trainer is in my opinion harder then picking a best fighter, because some trainers just gel better with different people.
Good point. As good as Eddie was,he would n't have gelled with Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard. Those two had to be the starman and Angelo Dundee accomodated that. Can't imagine Eddie doing so. However I still rate him as the number one trainer taking everything else into consideration.
That’s a good answer though, in terms of knowledge and champions made. Ray Arcel and Many Steward have to be up there. Dundee was exactly who I was thinking of when I said that actually. Another example might be Cus’damato who only had a few champs but basically forged them and it’s kinda hard to picture them becoming what they were without him. Jack Blackburn lived pretty well in both worlds.
One of them sure alongside Manny Steward, Angelo Dundee, the Mayweather Brothers, Curtis Cokes, Ray Arcel, Jack Blackburn, Joe Mensah, Charles Atkinson and the list goes on and on.
The trainer is always great when the fighter is great. Could they take a fighter like Mickey Ward and turn him into a Hall Of Famer? I don't think so.
He's on the short list. I'm not sure I'd rank him No. 1 ... I don't know who would be my choice, I need to think about it, and I agree that's a very daunting assignment ... but I would not argue for a millisecond with anyone who has him there.
Manny Stewart, Eddie Futch, Jack Blackburn, and Cus D Amato are a all a coin toss on the best trainers to me, but like another poster said its impossible to pick.
