Even the very tall fighters in Ali and Tyson's eras weighed around 220 - 230lbs. Lewis and the Klitschkos were around 245lbs. In fact Lewis used to be around 235lbs in the early 90s just like Bowe. Now you have Joyce who comes in at 260lbs with little fat and even if you stripped the fat of Zhang he would be around 260lbs. Will there be a day when these tall heavyweights weigh 300lbs with little body fat? What is causing these heavier weights?
Its pretty obvious a lot of guys are using PEDs and packing on muscle. Also guys are fatter, probably a mix of diet and only fighting like once a year
Very prevalent. You don't go from Shavers physique to Joshua's without "help". I'd not be surprised if some of these modern heavies are keeping roids in PEZ dispensers to conspicuously snack on them throughout the day. Hell some of them probably get their refill between rounds. The ol "hey coach, give me some of that drink I mixed" could have steroids in it for all we know.
When topics like this come up about tall boxers, I always think of Primo Carnera. P.S. IMO anabolic steroids are used much more in professional sports than is thought, talked about and written about.
It seems like none of you guys have used steroids and just heard “they make you a super hero”. Don’t get me wrong steroids work but not exactly they way you think. For boxing, fight sports and conditioning sports overall it’s not beneficial to do these high amounts bodybuilders do to pack on muscles/strength because your cardio will suffer, plus it gets harder to move/punch with all that extra weight. Low dose steroids is the way to go for fight sports, not to pack on muscle but to add in recovery. Recovery is the key. I doubt any high level fighter is on a ton of gear. Low dose Test and HGH is the way to go, maybe an oral before fights, but, none of that will put on pounds of muscles but will help with recovery. It’s of course a lot of other PED’s they could be on but a lot of them like Deca and EQ stays in your system for long and it will be harder to pass a test on them, so it’s not smart.
People are naturally bigger with each generation thanks to better access to health care, food etc. However you also have to factor in the whole sports science improvements and training improvements. That said I wouldn't be shocked if all top level heavyweights are microdosing as are most boxers.
I remember a poster here talking about his experience with roids as a boxer. He said his power went thru the roof so that is definitely something to look out for.
I can’t even comprehend how big Zhang is? That man is a full 40/50lbs heavier than giants like Bowe/LL. And how can a 290lb man have fast hands like that. And Joyce, how can a fighter change 30lbs of mass in 5/6 months without it being a load of fat… Crazy. Blatant PED use imo
Heavyweight is probably the worst for PEDs as it's so dependent on size and power and they don't need to cut the mass for weigh-ins. Mike Tyson described his strength-training routine on a video once, it was weighted dips and pulling a tyre around. That's how he got to 220lbs lean at 5'10 and for decades Muricans have told us about his unique afflete genes.
I wouldn’t say that happened to Benn but you saw he started KOing people and looking a different fighter
when will people learn that PEDs are not only about bodybuilding their most common use in heavyweight boxing is for the ability to throw hundreds of punches over 12 rounds despite looking like a fat sack of crap
