Canal 5: David Fernando Cuéllar Contreras vs. Luís Miguel Concepción Montiel RBR

Very early in round eight, there is an exchange that saw Concepción turn his back on Cuéllar and walk to his corner on what appears to be the ref's instructions. The contest is over, and Cuéllar is celebrating. Super unclear what just happened - TKO? (if so it was a terrible stoppage, basically first landed punch of the round and Concepción wasn't even hurt). DQ from a headbutt or something?

 

Yeah, TKO8. Weird. I mean, the outcome here was absolutely never in doubt from the opening bell, but...El Nica deserved to go another few rounds and lose on points. There were so many better moments to stop the fight, when he was taking tons of punishment to head and body, getting jawjacked with unanswered combos...earlier in the fight.

edit: yeah, okay, they finally show a replay of the stoppage. Right hand and left hook by David, partially blocked. Ref just had his mind made up to stop it that round and jumped the gun at an anticlimactic moment, I think.

 

Televisa follows the "main event first on the broadcast" protocol of televised Mexican boxing, so there are more live bouts to come. Idk...personally I'm kinda bummed after that. Seeing such a pathetic and almost declawed version of a guy that was a h2h monster in the fly range a dozen years ago, and then seeing him denied the chance to see the final bell because of a brain fart of officiating...eh. Hard to stay excited, even with Lupe Contreras' elastic-lipped articulation introducing the next set of combatants.

 

Celex Antonio Castro Olivares vs. Kevin Alexis Villanueva Hernández, 8 rounds @ super bantamweight

 

Both are 23 year old Mexicans but Castro is the one from Cancún (big pop from the crowd at his name) and sporting the 14-0 record, so, clearly the A-side.

Kevin "Desvalagado" Villanueva has a decent record himself but has picked up four losses (three by stoppage) and there draws in his 28 bouts, all domestic.

 

Tentative opener. 10-9 Castro, utilizing his big reach and height advantages, boxing tall from distance with drawbridge lowering jabs.

 

Villanueva down hard twice in the second and waved off with just a few seconds until the bell.

KO2!!

 

Hard to really gauge Castro based on six minutes of action, but glancing at his ledger this was a pretty big step up in class for him - and he did impose his will and get rid of his man without preamble. Wasn't pretty, but did the job. 15-0 (13) now, but again, most of that previous opposition wasn't up to much. Jury's out on the Cancúnense.

 

Brandon Jared Chaparro Mojica vs. Aaron De La Cruz Escobedo, 6 rounds @ light flyweight

 

Okay so the house DJ playing "I Was Made For Loving You" by KISS loudly over the PA, in entirety throughout all of the first round gave me unspeakable anxiety.

Couldn't even concentrate on the fight.

 

Both are undefeated, both teenagers.

 

Massive knockdown by De La Cruz with an uppercut slicing the middle as the short southpaw was circling out. Insanely the ref lets it continue even though Mojica reacted like he took a shotgun blast.

Brutal finish later in the round, really shouldn't have gone on. Scary scene with Mojica lying on his back staring up at the lights by the bottom rope being attended to by medics.
