Benny Leonard for me. He is in many historian's P4P top ten all time lists and if I had a list, he'd fall somewhere around 8-10 I guess.. There were so many great Jewish fighters but Benny was the best of them all imo.
The modern era includes Dana Rosenblatt, Dimitry Salita, Yuri Foreman,Travis Kaufmann and Cletus Seldin. I feel like I'm forgetting someone, but can't remember who.
I kinda like Joey Maxim. Wasn’t an ATG by any means but that man had guts. EDIT: oops guess he was Italian. My bad
My dad's favorite was Benny Leonard by far. Of those who boxed in my lifetime I'll go with Saoul Mamby.
Solly Seeman was an old time Bantam Weight who beat Sammy Mandell, Jimmy Goodrich, Willie Davis, Jimmy Blue, Sammy Vogel, Mickey Brown, Joe Leopold, Red Dolan, Frankie LaFay, Johnny Ciccoli, Frankie Richie & Benny Vierra amongst others. He was also ducked by Rocky Kansas when Solly was #1 contender for the LW title. He retired out of frustration. Solly was voted in the top ten Jewish boxers of all time years ago.
Agreed. Whilst he's clearly behind Benny Leonard and Barney Ross from a P4P ATG perspective, imo, Attell must be in with a good shout of the most underappreciated Jewish boxer of all time. The c.26 x defences of his FW crown during his 8.5 year reign stacks up, numbers wise, pretty well with just about any number of lineal world title defences, in any weight division, in the sports entire history.
Abe is brilliant but perhaps his rating takes a hit by the legend that he was totally schooled by Jim Driscoll in a famous no decision match. Not sure if the legend is correct?
