Prime Floyd Patterson vs Prime Dwight Qawi Muhammad

Hmmm ... that is a hell of an interesting match up and one I never thought about ... Patterson but a hell of an interesting fight ...

 

This would be a fun one for sure. I think most are going to go with Patterson but I like Qawi's durability to win out. I think Patterson has his moments for sure with his superior speed but I don't think he can hurt Qawi and as the fight progresses, he gets stopped by the ultra tough Qawi.

 

I absolutely think Patterson could hurt Qwai and feel he could absorb Qwai's as well ... it was the monster punchers like Ingo and Sonny that bounced Floyd around ... he fought tooth and nail w Chuvalo, Quarry, Bonavena, Ellis and many others as an older guy .. I have a lot of reset for Qwai but feel above heavyweight he's become a bit overrated , more than anything based on Holyfield 1 but people forget how inexperienced Evander was at that time ..

 

Patterson

 

Floyd by TKO in 11th, in a thrilling fight up until that point. I think his speed plays an underrated factor.

 

Patterson, by UD or TKO around the 13th. He's much faster and Floyd hit harder than he was generally given credit for. Certainly enough for Qawi

 

I think Quawi's straight punching and ferocity would give him a close decision. I don't think Floyd's combos could penetrate Quawi's defense enough to cause real damage. His shortness would give Floyd trouble. Close fight but I give the edge to Quawi.

 

I question Floyd's durability in this one but like his ability to box. Does he box as sharply as Michael Spinks? Who knows? I personally do not think so. I think Qawi would time him and hit him with big shots that would either knock Floyd down or force Patterson into a round losing style of fight. Qawi was an excellent timing puncher and had a tendency to hit guys with full-torque super hard punches, so while he wasn't George Foreman, he hit guys so hard to the eye. It just looks bad. I think of the Leon Spinks fight. Qawi UD/late TKO.

I’m going with Floyd

 

If Qawi is on it he’ll win. People mentioning the Spinks fight are right to do so, but I can’t get my head round that fight. He just took 3 rounds off near the start of the fight being so passive, and didn’t get going all that well. I still had the scoring razor thin that being said. Find it difficult to buy that Spinks’ power hurt him, the shots he took from Forman and Holyfield were impressive. Maybe that illness story checks out or was just an off night. The sharp Qawi who worked a good jab and cut the ring will take this and would’ve beaten Spinks imo.

 

Floyd … again he’s badly underrated here.

 

Agreed. While Floyd’s chin was shaky, Qawi wouldn’t have had the kind of overwhelming power to knock him out as the heavy’s who stopped Patterson did. And it would be one of the rare instances in which Floyd would be the bigger man. He was also quick, highly skilled and could punch a bit himself. Go fifteen rounds too.
