Did Jerry Quarry became underrated ?

Among us classic fans... I mean.

He was viewed as "the best fighter to never win a title" back then !
So, today we don't rate him as high.....
Should he be in the Hall of Fame ?

 

I don't think hes underrated no alot of people favour him against punchers even modern ones, I've seen him favoured over the likes of Tua who is pretty popular.

As for Hall Of Fame ? No not for me.

 

Yeah I wrote this while reading some very high praises on a Ring Mag from way back in the day. He was viewed as a serious guy.

 

I've seen him favored over ****Ing Wilder! With that defense, sure. Quarry is somewhat overrated imo.

 

This happens because of his fight with Shavers. You go up against the biggest puncher of the era and stomp him within 1 round, you get a bit of respect.

 

I think he has certainly become underrated with most modern boxing fans. As for the Hall of Fame, I understand arguments either way. He is better than a number of fighters who did get in. But, with no title, it is usually "no dice."

 

"The best to never win a title" schtick was overrating him and down right insulating to for example Wills. I'd say he was on the level of Machen and Folley and many other good contenders over the years.

 

I hate to say this, but that statment probably had something to do with him being a heavyweight white hope and very marketable that way, because yeah he was nowhere near that, there is dozen of other guys that never won a title back then that were surely better than him.

 

Yes, unfortunately there are racist undertones to the concept of him being the best to never win a title.

 

He’s both overrated and underrated. Overrated because he had multiple chances against the best of his era and came up short. So this best to never win the title is nonsense. Underrated because his resume is filled with depth. Fought a lot of dangerous guys at their best. Hall of famer no. But a top contender yes.

 

I think Jerry gets the right amount of respect on this site. Not Hall of Fame though and,yes,calling him the best heavy never to win the world title is over the top,especially when you think of the likes of Sam Langford and Harry Wills.

I rate Jerry as around sixth or seventh best heavyweight of the 1970s which is some kudos when you consider the quality of that decade.

 

He likely picks up a belt in the 80s. I can't think of too many eras that he'd be guaranteed to be champion. In the early 20th century or late 19th century or early 1930s, he likely becomes the champion. But even in the early 30s, no guarantees. He could beat Max Schmeling, Baer, Jack Sharkey and Carnera, but they could also beat him. Especially Schmeling and Sharkey. I doubt he gets past Louis.

 

His record is spotty but he had a pretty decent run in the 70s between the 1st Ali loss and Frazier fight, and called out Foreman plenty of times between 1971 and 74, so it's a pity that didn't happen when he was on his good run of form. I think he's u a bit underrated when compared with someone like Cleveland Williams or Earnie Shavers.

 

I don’t believe so. He’s not one of the fighters that you see too many people bashing when his name comes up and he’s also received some pretty good support in fantasy fights.

 

He should get props for facing just about everybody. Foreman is the big name missing, but hardly a fault of Jerry's.
