Figured it best to go straight from the source to settle this matter of curiosity.

I made this remark in a Classic thread asking to explain how big a domestic star Frank Bruno was:

"Not a Brit myself but my read on Bruno's popularity is that he was by some distance their most beloved 'man of the people'/underdog figure in boxing since Henry Cooper. (but I'm of course open to being corrected on that front by those who fly the Union Jack)

And would remain so until maybe Hatton?
    "

    Strewth?

Also, sidebar: who do we reckon would have won this? Let's call it 12 rounds.

Or is this (as I suspect may be the case) more of a generational thing? Older geezers being more inclined to say Cooper, middle-aged blokes going more for Bruno, and the youngish knobs saying Hatton?

    Bruno by a mile

He was an absolute star in an era where we had no more than 4 TV channels and was literally everywhere

Copper was well thought of but Frank's management definitely found a gimmick for him and various catchphrases that boosted his earning power and profile

The night he fought Tyson as the challenger was absolutely huge

Sky was a huge cost back then and most people I know listened to the fight on the radio

My whole family set the alarm to do so and none of them really care for boxing, but they were invested in Frank

I'm proud to say I've met him a number of times in my life and he is a lovely bloke who deserves the money he earnt

    It's a landslide, Frank Bruno.

I have to imagine he's also the strong favorite in a h2h to grind Enery down by about the midway point.

Joe Bugner has to be their only common opponent, surely? Mad lad fought both men three decades apart.

(that said, a left hook could spell Bruno's end if he isn't careful)

Crazy to think bugner fought both men.

I’m going with Bruno although my dad thought he was crap at the time and he’d probably pick Henry. Plus my dad met him years ago at a golf course and said he was a real gent

Different generations will give a different result but Bruno is my pick due to the fact that his fights were on terrestrial TV and nearly everybody loved the man at the time.

Bruno unrivalled. All those fights on BBC in early 80s with Harry Carpenter interviewing him after, such innocence about him he went right into the nations hearts more & more

hardly anybody under 40 knows who Henry Cooper is, and those who know Frank Bruno know him from Christmas pantomimes and shaking hands with the Yorkshire Ripper and Jimmy Saville in Broadmoor

I think 'Enry's popularity at the time is being under-estimated a bit. He transcended sport in a way that only perhaps two or three footballers and a few other sportsmen did.

Couldn’t tell you because never watched either live . Most won’t have watched Cooper live either, hence the answers here.

People always go for the most recent and same with the football.

For example Salah for many Liverpool fans will be better than Kenny Dalglish and Jordan Henderson better than Graeme Souness.

Both probably not fit enough to lace the boots of Dalglish and Souness.

I see your point but would struggle to find a Pool fan who would rate Henderson and Salah over Dalglish and Souness

Depends on how old you are I guess, but like I said in the other thread Bruno is and was the most loved British boxer ever.

    No contest....
