Rosendo Alvarez. Close fights, the both of them, the first of which was ruled a draw. Lopez was past his prime by then though.

And the eaely 90's were part of Whitaker's peak, his P4P years. He had more than just "something left" early on. I'd say the 90's were definitely better for him than the 80's overall, though he really split his time between the two.

A mullet? Are you thinking of Michael Carbajal? If so they never fought, and Carbajal was taller than Lopez. I don't know who the hell you're talking about. Alvarez was really the only big time opponent Lopez ever faced to be honest, and he had a shaved head.

You might be thinking of the Carbajal/Gonzalez fights.

your right - you brought it back to me now

Michael Carbajal is the man I am referring to

    he never fought Lopez?

I must be mixing it up with the Gonzalez fights

remind me Gonzalez what was his full name

Humberto Gonzalez. He was in a trilogy against Carbajal which he won 2 of 3 officially, probably only deserved 1. Great fights, at least 1 of them won Fight of the Year, not sure which. Gonzalez also was in another Fight of the Year against Saman Sorjaturong which he lost by 7th round KO. he was passed his prime by that point however.

Lopez would've beaten both IMO, but it definitely would've done wonders for his otherwise lacking resume if he did face them.

another hyped fight at the lighter weights in the 90's

    Johnny Tapia V Danny Romero

    Tapia outclassed him

there was alot of bad blood there cos they were from the same town or something like that

Boxing fan never thought of it as a golden era at the time. we were always rightfully complaining about the lack of 50/50 superfights

But I really miss those days now
