From perusing this form over the years, it seems to me that there is a sort of general dislike towards Dr Pacheco whenever he comes up in conversation. I was wondering about this it kind of puzzles me I don't see anything wrong with the guy I've enjoyed his comments over the years. Am I missing something? And should I be glad that I'm missing it lol?
I don't hate the guy at all, but he was sort of a blowhard. He was also a Don King lackey of the highest order. He certainly knew who paid his bills. I mean, we all do the boss's bidding to some degree, but he just sounded like a toady. When your boss is Don King (when he was with Showtime anyway) that makes it all the more cringeworthy. He caught an immense amount of flak at the time for going on and on and on about how the second Chacon-Boza fight should have been stopped because of Chacon's cuts. Fair enough, I like that he was at least giving the appearance of looking after Chacon's well-being but he just would NOT shut up about it, detracting from the tremendous spectacle unfolding before the viewers.
I liked Pacheco when he did fights for NBC. The Showtime era was terrible. Pacheco, Czyz (close enough?), & Albert were so biased it wasn’t funny.
Try watching 3 or 4 'ShowTime' fights on YouTube that involve Pacheco, Steve Albert and Bobby Czyz commentating. The man clearly had no interest in the sport and it showed. As stated earlier, his shameless cheerleading for the 'home' fighters of Don King were pretty embarrassing too.
Perhaps some of my dislike of him has to do that he was on a broadcast team with Bobby Czyz, which will color anything in a poor light.
Ferdie always had this snooty ‘I’m a doctor and you’re not, so I know what I’m talking about’ attitude. Yet when he was calling Nigel Benn vs. Gerald McClellan he’s belittling McClellan for blinking — a very well-known symptom of brain trauma recognized by the medical community as a warning sign — while the guy literally a few feet in front of him is in major distress … and he doesn’t recognize it. He doesn’t mention it except to make fun of McClellan while questioning his heart, doesn’t go to the corner or the doctor or commission to try to get the fight stopped to get the guy help … nothing. So no, I’ve got zero for that pompous ass.
I'm nostalgic for those old Showtime cards. Alpert's phony hair, Czyz's phony MENSA intellect and the old Miami party boy Pacheco. Also, his Spanish calls on Univision were great. He wasn't perfect but he seemed real, at least before age started taking its toll. And he did want Ali to get out earlier than the rest of his entourage.
He was obviously an intelligent and articulate man - but a blowhard at the same time. He also said some nasty stuff re Frazier being “dumb” which definitely scored him demerit points in my book. The Col. Bob Sheridan needs some more love - his incisive and somewhat prophetic calls in Zaire and Tokyo are among the very best. It also seemed Sheridan took a lot of time out informally to get to know fighters and their backgrounds - he often provided some very solid info and nice tidbits re fighters - all of whom he appeared to genuinely respect.
Pacheco went on a rant on how Frazier was IGNORANT, over and over. The man was a POS. He milked his association with Ali to the max. He was a poor fight commentator/analyst. He and Chubby Czyz were painful to listen to, as both thought their chit didn't stink.. P.S. Anybody have Chubby Czyz address? I want to sent him a MENSA t-shirt for Christmas.
the colonel is great, just sounds like a guy who loves the fights and it shows. Feels like the old guy at the end of the bar having banter
I too am very nostalgic for Showtime broadcasts. Yes, a lot of dumb things were said, but those Alpert, Czyz and Pacheco's voices really added to the 'big fight' feel.
