Likely?????? Or are you catering for a stoppage Vitali's way? Or are you entertaining the thought Toney could win?

Relax dude, it was rather an allusion to your prediction which is not unreasonable per se. I just thought mine was more likely. anyway, with hypothetical matchups nothing is certain in nature of course. Due to the Byrd fight, I think Vitali's management wanted no part of Toney. They choose to fight a lot of bums instead.

I'm totally relaxed dude. I could see Toney going the distance but a stoppage is not out of the question. I personally cannot believe the Klit camp would have been afraid of Toney, of all people.

He fought a lot of bums for sure and it was a pretty weak era excepting the two Klits.

The best heavyweight Toney fought was Samuel Peter which he lost both times. Holyfield was shot,Ruiz had to constantly clinch to be an effective heavyweight honestly when Jones and his management team picked Ruiz they made sure to let the ref know about the excessive clinching and enforce the rules. Quinn and Booker were also nothing special.

Ruiz, Holyfield, and Peter were at a fairly similar level. Toney had deteriorated by the time he fought Peter, and still was very game in the first fight.

I think we also need to consider Roy as a HW here. Its fairly important. He had one fight at HW vs John Ruiz and admitted it was just a belt pick and that he did not belong at HW. His speed was severely diminished there.

When he stepped back down to LHW he was knocked out cold by both Tarver and Glenn Johnson inside 6 months. This needs to be considered.

Roy is a legend in his journey from MW up to LHW. But once he hit HW and dropped down his record was very poor. Those are the facts.

I think a Toney fight right after that John Ruiz fight, is a fight he probably loses. That is just my opinion. It is not a massive stretch given who he lost to twice inside 6 months after.

That's one way of looking at it.

Another is RJJ from his sole HW fight vs any Toney you care to choose. RJJ gets my pick, in this case.

An important distinction was made upthread...is it a discussion about a one off 'best version ' of Jones v Toney at heavyweight? Or a match between them at the time of - or immediately after - the Ruiz fight?
For me, the best version of Jones at heavy beats the best version of Toney, at that weight.
In terms of a fight being made around 2003... I'd comfortably pick the Jones of the Ruiz fight. Immediately after ... It's harder to say. Toney still had a lot left in the tank whereas Jones was declining rapidly. It is possible that without the cut to light heavy Roy would not have declined quite as steeply. If I had to pick ... I'd tentatively go for Jones. But the timing of it makes it a risky fight for him.

Roy actually beat a version of Tarver after fighting Ruiz who might’ve been good enough to beat both Toney and Ruiz.

Toney Peter 1 was close but it wasn't a robbery.

James has a better style for bigger heavy weights but Roy in the Ruiz fight looked impeccable if we base him solely on that!

Yes but can Toney catch Roy Jones at heavyweight? I seriously doubt it. It's a terrible style for Toney.

I think the valid argument here is that if Glenn Johnson and Tarver can catch him and put him to sleep. At the only point in his career where he fought at HW.

Then Toney could have done the same thing.
There is a probability here that it could have happened. This isn’t a 95-5 fight in Roy’s favour at this point in his and Toney’s career. It maybe 70-30 still, and those odds make this a valid debate.
