So i just rewatched this fight only having seen it once and never properly scoring it, but just tell me how in the world did Spinks get the decision ? for me it wasn't even close. Holmes dominated the early rounds and consistently throughout the fight rocked Spinks on numerous occasions.

Here's my scorecard and i'm actually surprised how wide i had it, there's no way Spinks won more than 6 rounds in this fight. I think Spinks got the decision because of Holmes's comments they wanted him out of the sport.

It was a horrible robbery one of the worst I have ever seen. And yes i think Larry got paid back for his comments.

Watched it a long time ago, but I had Holmes winning by 3 points. The highest margin I can remember for the loser in a HW title fight, so I suppose I'm with you on that. Well, I think I had a similar margin for Patterson vs Ellis, but the film of that wasn't complete on the other hand.

Biggest robbery for me in a HW title fight is Lewis-Holy 1, though, with Fury-Wilder 1 not far behind.

I had Larry ahead by 2 or 3 points but those two are worse decisions. I was happy enough with Fury-Wilder draw as i put £20 on at about 25-1 (big odds in such a crooked sport and something I bet on quite often). That 15-111 card for Wilder is one of boxing's all-time worst judges cards.

Not quite enough for Everton season tickets perhaps, but quite some winnings nonetheless.

And 115-111 for Wilder means that he won rounds without scoring a punch pretty much. Obviously he has some presence even without a 40 lbs suit. :)

Ha ha, not quite. Liverpool winning stuff has often paid for that...I know, i know, it's horrible dirty money but i need huge compensation when they win anything.

Holmes-Spinks 2 was the fight that convinced me to stop betting big money on boxing. At least big from a 29 year old me perspective. I had the fight 144-141 Holmes and, if anything, I thought the points disparity could be wider, not closer. That being said, I have not watched the fight since 1986. Maybe I should score it again. Either way, I am never getting my bet back.

Yeah Lewis vs Holyfield 1 is the worst by far, I've only seen Patterson vs Ellis once and never scored it properly. But from memory I remember having the feeling that it was a bad decision.

Foreman vs Schulz is up there aswell I scored that 8-4 for Schulz last time I see it.

Even though the ageing Holmes was fading a little in the last few rounds I feel that he'd done more than enough to earn the verdict on the judges' cards. I had Larry at least three rounds ahead.

Fogger, for me it was the first fight between Curtis Parker and Mustafa Hamsho. I had bet with a buddy of mine with me going for Parker, whom I had been following. So sure were we both that Parker beat him, my buddy paid me off before the decision was announced. Well, the New Jersey officials had the last laugh on me. Not only did I have to give him back his money, but had to pay on a horrible decision. Life as a fight fan. What can you do?!

This is how I had it, D.

    Holmes vs Spinks II

    Round 1: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 2: 10-9 Holmes *
    Round 3: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 4: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 5: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 6: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 7: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 8: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 9: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 10: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 11: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 12: 10-10 Even
    Round 13: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 14: 10-9 Holmes **
    Round 15: 10-9 Spinks

Total: 144-142 Holmes (actual scores: 144-141 Holmes, 144-141 Spinks and a 144-142 for Spinks on a split decision)

Let's look at the two rounds I noted. Round 2 which I scored 10-9 for Holmes, in the hands of someone more liberal with points could have called that 10-8 for Larry. He did stun Spinks towards the end of the round, but mostly because Spinks did absolutely nothing that round. It's up to the individual scorer.

Round 14 was another unusual one. Spinks started well and ended well, but Larry did stun him and followed up briefly before Spinks ended the round better. But how do you score? Spinks did most of the heavy lifting that round, but Holmes did rattle him. Very tight, but I gave it to Holmes. I could have called it even as well, but it was an intense moment for Larry. I see Harold (God rest him) also gave the round to Larry. Good fight. Felt Larry deserved this, but Spinks should be lauded for fighting his heart out.
