Fighters that you overrated, or that you thought would be more

One my biggest disappointments was John Mugabi. I watched his entire career, before Hagler I thought he had the goods.
He went through the tough as nails Jr. Middleweights/ middleweights from Philly/ Jersey easier than than any fighter not named Marvin Hagler.
Though most of those opponents were gate keepers, they were the type of fighters you had to beat, they gave nothing to you.
Mugabi went through them like a hot knife through butter. Destroyed them .
Than came the Hagler fight. Mugabi fought beyond valiantly often given just as much as he took.
But it was one of those types of fights that makes the fighter better or worse.
After the loss to Hagler Mugabi became worse.
Their were always rumors he didn't like to train , even before the Hagler fight.
It got worse after Hagler, plus that fight seemed to break him.
Any resistance from opponents after Hagler and he folded.
Like quite a few big punchers in boxing history he seemed to lose confidence and intensity after the 1st loss.

 

Basically anyone I Followed from the start and liked lol

 

I though John Meekins was going to be something. You could see fighters pretty early in their careers on ESPN and he looked pretty good early on.

 

And Mugabi had that great amatuer career. He was the rarest of breeds with 1 punch power with 3 different punches. And on his way up he didn't just beat guys---he ruined them.

Reading the Francis and Duff books it is incredible on how the guy got the results he did with his training and pre-fight preperations. That and having to go through a guy like Hagler to win a belt calls for an all time great fight and result against a great champion. Just don't get those results too often, do we?

 

Me too, I thought the Beast would slaughter the 154 lb division and recall the crowd chanting we want Hearns after one of his vicious ko's and there was talk but Emanuel Steward wanted none of that. When the Hagler fight was announced my first thought was Marvin has way to much experience though most thought at some point Mugabi would nail Hagler . Mugabi would have beaten a lot of good middleweights the night he lost to Hagler who absorbed some bombs that in retrospect seemed to take a lot out of Marvin too as he appeared to get old over night against Leonard. I really don't think Mugabi was managed that well either, after his loss he should have taken some time to heal and stayed at 160 with some wins over C level competition to get his confidence back, going back to 154 at that stage was pointless for a man his size.

Goya Vargas. Looked incredible beat Hoko for the feather weight title .lost it to Kelly then seemed to face away.

 

I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Chad Dawson would be a first ballot HOF'er

 

To be fair I was quite high on Dawson aswell he did have some good wins vs Harding, Tarver x2, Hopkins, Diaconu, Adamek, Johnson x2. I don't think you were wrong for hyping up Dawson he did look quite impressive for a stretch.
