Liam Thomas, a swimmer, dominated her competition so thoroughly that she finished the final race and was completely dry before the second-place swimmer completed it. This is an incredible achievement, considering she was previously ranked 462nd, and now she's a champion. Furthermore, she also won the Woman of the Year award. Liam's accomplishments are truly amazing, and she inspires many.
I see it as a mixture of Ngannou being much better than expected, Fury under performing, and Fury being in general overrated. He’s a great heavyweight but he’s beatable, as shown in this fight and by Wilder. Ngannou showed exceptional grappling, good fight IQ, and the ability to switch stances. He surprised Fury and everyone else, nearly producing arguably the greatest upset in sporting history. For me Fury clearly did not take the fight seriously and did not train as hard as he had for previous fights. He didn’t expect the war he got and couldn’t handle that Ngannou refused to be bullied. However this is no excuse and the performance was embarrassing for him and the entire sport. He’s got a lot to make up for in the Usyk fight and I personally believe he owes Ngannou a rematch down the line. All in all it’s been a pretty disastrous past 12 months for Fury in terms of enhancing his boxing legacy.
Liam is a legend, a true underdog story to reach the top. She was carrying a little extra weight which also made her less streamlined but she dealt with the situation to become number 1.
Great inputs so far with good examples of other stunning things in different sporting disciplines ! When memory serves 'she' is a transgender which opened a debate how to deal with when a basicly male body transgenders and takes competitions in female disciplines .
Ngannou boxed before he did MMA, he has been sparring for a long time with world class heavyweights, he weighed over 270 pounds, he has fought before in the big time with big crowds so he wasn't going to freeze in the ring, he has good stamina and he kept the pressure on. If a big, strong guy like Ngannou doesn't fatigue, and his opponent can't hurt him, he's going to be a tough fight for anybody. Underestimating Ngannou is a mistake. He has good boxing fundamentals, and at 270+ of muscle, he might beat anybody. If a guy like Ngannou came into a gym with no fight training he'd still be a danger to anybody who sparred with him, a guy like that with training is much more dangerous. Would not want to bet against him if he continues boxing.
True. Also if I remember correctly Foreman and Wilder won medals at the Olympics in relative very short time with relative very little boxing experience.
After seeing the fight , absolutely agree . I initially thought a guy of the calibre and experience of ngannou might be able to be competitive against a hw on a national level , maybe on european level but i still cannot believe he was able to handle the #1 wbc hw . I do not think fury performed WAY under his possibilities , maybe a bit - until he saw this is serious . That would mean ngannou might be deadly dangerous for ANY current hw - and this is a miracle for me .
It is a combo of factors 1) Fury isn't as anywhere as good as his fanboys think & shouldn't be anywhere near HW GOAT convo 2) Fury isn't a big puncher by HW standards (KO ratio of 69%) but he thought he was a KO artist because he stopped Wilder 3) Fury is big on leaning on his opponents to tire them out & didn't anticipate that Ngannou being an MMA fighter is pretty used to the clinch game, so his usual tactic didn't work 4) Ngannou's Boxing was much better than people thought & he was playing around in those open workouts to make it seem like he didn't know the basics Unlike McGregor who was just looking for a payday, Ngannou's original ambition was to box but he was guided to MMA in France on the argument that it would be easier to break into the top there (that's what I read). France is not as big of a Boxing market as UK either, so that might have factored into the advice he got on what to pursue. So Ngannou must have taken it very seriously instead of looking for an easy payday as most anticipated
I don't think it's boxing snobishness. The guys you mentioned, Lesner, Sapp, did they get to fight the champ first fight debut? That's the problem. Fans are pissed that the Ngannou fight happened when there was a undisputed fight hanging in the balance. Against an undeserving opponent.
Bob Sapp was a professional Football player before his fighting career. He had 2 or 3 MMA fights before he went to Kick-Boxing. In Kick-Boxing he had 1 win and one DQ before fighting the Champion Ernesto Hoost and he beat Hoost in back to back fights. Brock Lesnar came from WWE which isn’t even supposed to be real fighting and did win the UFC Heavyweight title in his 4th fight. Going into that fight his record was 2-1. Nagannou was the Heavyweight UFC Champion with a record of 17-3. And the UFC matches aggressively they don’t care about a guys 0. That cherry will get popped.
It's been a while since I watched the Sapp-Hoost fights, so I might be remembering it wrong. But I recall that the refs were letting Sapp get away with murder in that fight. They were almost officiating them as if it was an mma fight, not a kickboxing one. Sapp was getting away with insane pushing. I'm not talking about Foreman type pushes where he pushes the guy's chest or shoulder back to create some distance after a combination. I'm talking about like deliberately running at the guy and tackling him straight to his back. He probably should have been disqualified for that, but you know... K1 was insanely corrupt.
