I agree that Holmes didn’t hold back as he claimed. He tried for a KO.

As you said, he only let up later in the fight because all his prior work had only amounted to him beating up a dead man standing.

Holmes was talking a full effort for the KO leading in - to remove the ****** of Ali’s shadow from his back.

He was 110% prepared for it - reports out of camp had him sparring more rounds than ever and badly punishing his partners in the process.

Pictures of Ali in his gym were drawn over, depicting Ali to be beaten up.

Holmes had every right to fight his fight however he wished - but his claims of regret and holding back after the fact were disingenuous imo.

Yes, watched this. Leon had struggled to make weight, was even less competitive than he might otherwise have been. Qawi not only toyed with him he seemed to genuinely enjoy putting the beating on him.
Great fighter but that was a bit off putting.

Probably Duran against Davey Moore. He seemed to be enjoying himself.

There is a black and white photo of Moore on the canvas with his arm draped over the bottom rope - his face a mask of blood and swollen tissue. Duran is looking down at him with a huge grin inidicating he was getting a sort of sadistic satisfaction from bieating the s&it out of Moore.

Chacon v. Limon does not belong with the others. It was a competitive two way war where Chacon needed the final round knockdown to win.

I am not sure sure how you define a beating as being mean spirited.

If the fighter administering the beatdown was just doing what they needed to do to win, then all's fair in love and war.

Mean spirited implies an unnecessary element to it.

He thumbed his eye as well. He was very mean in the ring, even for a sport where you try to punch the other guy in the head.

You're right, they beat the hell out of each other and the fearsome display of savagery I recalled is the only way I can explain my blunder. Time to watch this one again.
