Instances where the boxer talked during the ring

That fella was Ernie Terrell and a little context is required for the "what is my name?" gig.

Ali was born Cassius Clay and during its initial years as a professional boxer he looked pretty much just like your regular black fighter with white managers. Just another pawn for the boxing establishment to play with.

But Ali was different.

During the swinging sixties he got politically involved with the civirl rights movement, MLK, Malcom X, the Nation of Islam, the refusal to be drafted for Vietnam, the whole enchilada. He became a muslim and changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

Of course the boxing establishment didn't take it well. So many refused to call him by his muslim name and kept calling him Cassius Clay, which greatly bothered him.

In the press conference before their bout, Terrell called him "Cassius Clay" and Ali got mad. They had to be restrained to prevent a fight then and there.

Anyway, during the official fight, once Ali felt confortably on command he started to taunt Terrel asking him "What is my name'".

There are many who consider Ali made the fight to go for the whole 15 rounds on purpose, refusing to settle for a quick KO, just to keep punishing Terrell.

Don't forget Ali was born Cassius Clay, and changed his name after the first bout with Sonny Liston. A few opponents after that referred to him as Clay, and it seemed to rile Ali quite a lot.

 

During the Ali - Norton 3 fight, Norton kept talking to Ali, especially at the end of the rounds. I don't know what Norton said, but Ali didn't like it, but couldn't do much, either. Norton was taunting and mocking his opponent, and Ali left the ring straight after the fight. He'd finally had a taste of his own medicine.

 

David Telesco was calling Roy Jones a b1tch in the last round of their fight. Arthur Mercante Sr. was telling him to stop talking. Both he and his son didn’t like it when boxers would talk in the ring. Arthur Jr. was quick to tell boxers to stop talking but would just stand there and do nothing when guys (like Diobleys Hurtado) almost got killed on the ropes taking punishment.

 

Frazier constantly called him Clay, just to **** him off.

 

Foreman muttered something about getting killed to the great Dwight Muhammad Qawi during their brutal fight.

 

Adrien Broner talking trash to Jessie Vargas calling him a bum, with Vargas responding by saying "You ain't sh/t!" @ 27:25

Well, Roberto Duran either did or did not say this in his rematch with Leonard (he claims he never said it but I have no idea what the point is — he clearly quit whatever verbiage he used, and he definitely verbally communicated it to the ref):

“No mas. No mas box.”

 

Near the end of the first round, it sounded like Berbick was telling Homes, "You ain't no Muhammad Ali"

I've never seen this fight & am surprised this rather shocking detail wasn't more widely reported
