Evander should win but I think it would take him a while to break Gerry down and would have to take a lot of hard shots along the way. Holy struggled with the big boys and Cooney would have a lot of size on him with punching power that would keep him honest. Probably a good fight…. We also have to remember that 1992 Holyfield was the one who lost to Bowe, taken the distance by an ancient Holmes and was floored by Bert cooper
I think Holyfield would take him apart in five rounds, absorbing some tough shots in the first round.
Hmm? I was going to say Evander immediately but your points are very solid. This is a dangerous fight for Holyfield, not that he wouldn't win but there is big danger with Gerry.
I'm surprised people are picking Holyfield so easily in this fight, Cooney was a huge puncher and Holyfield liked to go to war in early 90s. He struggled vs the likes of Cooper, past it Dokes, Stewart, and Holyfield was rocked and hurt on numerous occasions in these fights. Yes Holyfield should win possibly by late stoppage but certainly not easily Holyfield would be in a fight. And theres no way Holyfield is stopping Cooney early when did Holyfield ever stop a notable Heavyweight early ? apart from a fat unmotivated Douglas.
I agree, but I think it would be a runaway decision. Holyfield would definitely take some bumps, though.
People forget or don't realize that Cooney was a dedicated body puncher he really hurt people to the body.....their is no doubt if he could hurt someone he finished them if possible but his body shots were brutal...just watch how he hurt Young and Lyle with body shots....if Holy goes to war he will have to take those bone breaking body shots....if Holy fights smart he could outbox and maybe stop Gerry but that's if he has anything left from the body work...we know Cooney might struggle late the key is to remember that unlike Holmes Holy loved a punch up I like Holys odds but could see Cooney winning
