Povetkin actually fought the best unlike wilder. Byrd, Chambers , Chagaev, Huck , whyte and old Rahman is better than what wilder has.
Wilder’s resume is worse honestly but I rank his career higher. He gave Fury a very good go and despite the Parker trouncing, Povetkin got beaten badly in his two biggest fights. That being said, I don’t think Wilder is above the Povetkin bracket. Guys like Vitali and Bowe both of whom have fairly thin resumes still have beaten superior opponents to Wilder. I don’t think he’s a top 30 heavyweight of all time.
In a way though, this feeds into the 0 protecting problem we have in boxing now with guys claiming to be the best and refusing to prove it. I mean - Wilder's career highlight is holding a belt. When we look at it objectively, Wilder lost badly to the best two fighters he fought (Fury and Parker) and Povetkin lost to the best two fighters he fought (Wlad and Joshua) too. When you look at Povetkins best wins, they're far better. Then you have the cherry on the cake - it wasn't Povetkin that ducked Wilder.
Wilder did almost knock out Fury in 2 different times and knocked out Ortiz twice. Povetkin has more depth but did lose badly vs his 2 best opponents. Very good debate.
By Wilder is above Povetkin did you mean head to head or just who you think was better/more talented ?
Wilder struggled with Fury when he was super rusty - let's not pretend he was ever on Fury's level. Ortiz is a hypejob with an extremely limited resume - at 38 (at least), he was past his best as well... Let's not pretend that's a particularly special career highlight. Byrd, Chagaev, Rahman and Whyte are all better wins than Ortiz - and that counter to knock out Whyte was a truly elite piece of work. I don't think there's much debate at all - Povetkin was a better fighter with a better resume than Wilder... No wonder Wilder was glad of an excuse to run away from him.
Chris Byrd and Hasim Rahman were way past it when Povetkin beat them. I don't think Whyte is better than Ortiz was. Chagaev is similar
Povetkin pretty clearly, though to be fair he also would have lost to Fury probably, but not by KO. Povetkin is definitely better than Wilder, and that's why Wilder was happy to duck him for that over-the-counter medication Povetkin had in his system, as opposed to the roids Wilder has clearly been on, especially when deciding to magically pack on lean bulk for Fury despite being an ectomorph. It's just another example of how the belts aren't really merit based, but largely to do with how they are acquired and controlled. Wilder will go down as a long-time champ and Povetkin as one who fell short. But that's only because he couldn't get a fight with Stiverne then hold on to the belt with careful matchmaking. He had to fight Wlad and get hugged to death, then AJ when he was nearing forty and past it.
Then IMHO you're falling into the standard trap of overrating Ortiz by a very long way. Yes, Byrd and Rahman were a bit past it, but so was Ortiz when he fought Wilder... And Pov didn't need referee interference to survive. Chagaev was miles better than Ortiz. For me, prime PED-fuelled Whyte would've beaten prime (PED-fuelled) Ortiz too IMHO... But as there's so much daylight I can even agreed to disagree on Whyte and still have more than enough ammo I think.
