Mercer vs Liston

Can you name ONE top tenner Mercer destroyed aside from Morrison?

 

Depends which Mercer shows up. This one I would favor Liston. If Mercer shows up in shape, might be interesting, but I think Sonny would keep him at bay. Mercer is tough so I don't see a KO.

 

I would favor Liston to use his spectacular jab to systematically outbox Mercer either to a one sided decision or late stoppage. Mercer might have a puncher’s chance but not a very good one

 

I wouldn’t favor Mercer over Liston in a million years. But in addition to Morrison he DID manage to beat quality fighters in Bert Cooper and Francesco Damiani. Also gave a prime Lewis fits in a close decision. That said Liston should be a huge favorite

 

Liston would have outpointed Mercer something like an ancient Holmes.

 

Liston was much much better than an old Holmes.

 

Liston competitive UD imo.

 

I’d take a clear Liston decision - not a stoppage or what have you, my impression is it’d be a snoozer. Mercer isn’t being stopped or losing this In a cowboy shoot out, he’s being outboxed. Sonny isn’t going to risk having his head knocked off against someone he most likely can’t KO in a skirmish, he’ll wear him down like professional.

 

Tough with Mercer in the mood ! Liston liked to intimidate opponents that's not going anywhere with Mercer !!

 

Mercer would laugh at him.

 

Cleveland Williams, Nino Valdez, Mike Dejohn, Zora Folley, were not the slightest bit intimidated by Liston..... they're 0-5 against him. All of them ktfo. Funny huh?

 

I dont rate their durability or abilities compared to Mercer on his night. Weak weak era.

 

Yeah Mercer actually had a glass jaw, too .

 

They should thank their lucky stars, their were no 12-41-4 Marion Wilson's around.

 

No even useless fighters could pick up wins back then. Hed probably have a reverse record in Listons Era.
