Nicknames that worked as first names

    Nobody called Muhammad ‘The Greatest Ali,’ or Joe ‘Smokin’ Frazier.’

    What are some boxer nicknames that doubled as first names. And let’s stay away from the common shortened versions or variations like Tommy for Thomas or Rocky for Rocco.

    And if a guy wasn’t generally called that, shouldn’t count either. Like Bazooka Limon, yes (nobody called him Rafael) but Bazooka Gomez, no (he was known as Wilfredo). And I’ll get Marvelous Hagler out of the way since he changed it to his first name, lol.

    Best are the Thai boxers. Both their first and last names are nicknames of some sort.

    I think in Japan fighters often use their nicknames as their first name. Outside of already mentioned Fighting Harada:
    - Guts Ishimatsu.
    - Trash Nakanuma.
    - Puma Toguchi.
    - Leopard Tamakuma.
    - Crazy Kim.

    Mike's not really a nickname in the spirit of a true nickname, more a shortened version of the original name, like Dave to David or Ed to Edward.

    Marvelous is the one I think of - so much so that Hagler changed his name.

    Canelo Alvarez is the most well known example. Almost everyone seems to refer to him in his boxing nickname more so than his actual name (Saul Alvarez).
