Joe Frazier never came close to stopping Ali in 41 rounds, Ali even got up from the left hook for the ages in FOTC, I don’t see Frazier mustering up that left hook in Manila after he’d been pounded to a pulp for the last few rounds. And Ali may have said “cut em off” but when it came right down to gonad cutting time he’d have died that night before quitting in his corner, the man had a core of inner toughness that was like titanium encrusted diamonds that some folks still deny to this day. I know people love Joe Frazier and would love to come up with some scenario where he could’ve proved for all time he was the better fighter (note I am not saying better man, neither of these guys had unsoiled hands there) of the two, especially after Ali’s damnable behavior toward him in Manila. But it was not going to happen. Because he wasn’t the better fighter.
There was a local sports show and before this fight I was going to call and say how there were Asian fighters that were getting title shots they had no business getting and somebody was going to get killed. To be fair Kim obviously put up a great fight, something I was not expecting but it was a gruesome prediction that unfortunately came true.
One of Tyson's fights after Don King took over his career and hired a bunch of hanger on's to work his corner. They kept repeating the same nonsense, and sounded more like "hype men" than boxing trainers. Can't remember which fight it was.
I agree, Ali never quits - among other examples, there was of course the Holmes fight that came later - even more reason to quit there - but Ali didn’t. Dundee was THE man in charge though, technically, morally and for all practical purposes - if he was deferring to the leech Herbert Muhammad, then he was wrong and is still liable for blame for having allowed it to go on longer than it should have. I would guess that Eddie Futch, as per his absolutely correct actions in Manila in favour of Joe’s health and safety, would’ve likely stopped it sooner if he’d been in charge of Ali’s corner.
I agree with you on Angelo. He should have said screw Herbert and stopped it way earlier but as you know Ali’s corner and management were not your typical corner and management.
Yes, I def. wasn’t refuting your qualification or disagreeing with your point - I absolutely concur with that, it seems Dundee did act the puppet in so far as when he stopped the fight.
Ali did say that. Ali didn't mind spinning a yarn though. Both of Joe's eyes were closed from memory and he took a hell of a beating in the last 2 rounds.
Davey Moore’s corner against Roberto Duran Richard Hall’s corner against Roy Jones Drago probably wasn’t going to stop anyway. He shoved the ref away when he tried to stop it, and continued to beat Apollo until he killed him. I actually saw the Director’s Cut for the first time a few days ago. It’s an interesting watch. More serious than the original version. Interestingly, Aaron Snowell went on to have some good success later on as a trainer. But the corner in Tokyo was just atrocious.
That one never made sense to me, plot wise. The ref had attempted to intervene moments before and was shoved aside by Drago, should have been an automatic DQ at that point. Rocky throwing in the towel would have accomplished nothing. Drago was going to keep hammering Creed until he went down period. The best Rocky could have done was to run in the ring and tackle Drago, lol. Edit: @Thread Stealer beat me to it, lol.
Man, Rocky didn't want to let him out for the second round but Apollo talked him out of it. The job of the corner is to use their experience to maximise the boxer's chances - Rocky was easy talked out of following his gut instincts, for what? Cos Apollo let him beat him in an imaginary slow motion sprint - bromance wasn't worth his life. One mountain run and revenge isn't beating the genetically stacked and juiced to the gills Swedish Russian - the whole thing pi55ed me off royally.
Pete Ranzany's corner in his fight with Sugar Ray Leonard. Ray was literally pounding Pete from ringpost to ringpost. After Pete hit the canvass from a right hand, he rose on wobbly legs and was glassy eyed and out of it. The ref made a terrible decision to let the fight continue but Pete's cornermen should have stepped in and stopped it at that point. I know a corner can't stop a fight during a round but in every instance I've seen where a corner throws in a towel or jumps in the ring, the ref will stop the fight. In this case, Leonard pounced on Pete and battered him senseless. At one point, Pete was in his own corner while Leonard pounded him repeatedly with right hands. Pete's head was down and he was barely standing and still, his corner did nothing to stop the carnage. Finally, the ref stopped it. I watched this fight live on TV and was outraged Pete took that punishment. Very bad job by both the ref and Pete's cornermen.
