There was talk about Wilfredo Gomez-Little Red Lopez at 126 before Salvador Sanchez ended Danny’s reign. Would have loved to have seen those sparks fly.
Joe Louis vs Elmer Ray Was a period in 1946-1947 where this match could have happened. Would be an epic firefight between a swarming power puncher and a boxer puncher. Ray had beaten both Walcott and Charles in their primes so he had both the power and skill to make this interesting.
If Tony Weeks would be refereeing that, I'm sure he would have stopped it during the pre-fight instructions.
First issue of Ring Magazine I ever owned, August 1979, we were at the beach on family vacation and in the grocery store stocking up and I saw it in the rack and I’m sure it was the first time I became aware that there even was such thing as a boxing magazine. So i asked my parents to get it for me and they did. The cover was Fights You Want to See. There were six, three of which happened: Larry Holmes vs. Muhammad Ali (little did we know, but those were the top two heavyweights in the world at the time and there was a want to see it settled in the ring) Jose Cuevas vs. Roberto Duran (which wasn’t a great fight but a very significant one … kind of a loser leaves town type matchup for staying viable, launched Duran’s ‘second career’) Victor Galindez vs. Matthew Franklin (as he was known then, what a war that would have been) Hugo Corro vs. Marvin Hagler (this was more about getting Marvin his shot, but it would instead be vs. Corro conqueror Vito Antuofermo) Ray Leonard vs. Wilfred Benitez (a really wonderful technical fight) Wilfredo Gomez vs. Danny Lopez (alas, it never happened) So The Ring was playing this game 45 years ago, and probably before that haha. It wasn’t an artful cover, just type kind of like a fight poster but no images over a yellow background, but I can still picture it today. Might have to see if I can track that one down online sometime and order it for nostalgia purposes.
