I was impressed by Bivol's performance against Canelo. He had a game plan, stuck to it and beat Canelo on points with ease. He really did make it look easy. Canelo couldn't do anything. That said, Canelo is just not a LHW. He's too small. He is the champion at 168 pounds. At 175 he beat a shot to smithereens Kovalev. Whooopeedoo. Canelo's power did not carry to LHW. He kept hitting Bivol on the arms and guard and couldn't budge Bivol's guard in the slightest. Bivol was just too strong. I'd like to see Beterbiev hit those Bivol shoulders. Beterbiev would tear the damn shoulder clean off. That's an actual LHW. Not a blown up smaller man.
Beterbiev is considered to be one of (if not the) strongest current fighter physically. So taking him as the reference point for what a real LHW fighter is does not seem super representative of the general LHW landscape
And Bivol is not considered a physically strong LHW and Canelo couldn't budge his guard and was being backed up regularly. Canelo does not have the size and strength for 175.
Perhaps it's overrated but it's clear he's the best outside of Beterbiev. I'm not sure who wins, it's a quality match up. I maybe leaning towards Beterbiev but that might change before the fight. I can think of ways for either to win, that's how good this match up is. I knew Bud/spence would be a mismatch, same with Inoue/Fulton but this fight will be competitive and whoever wins will have beaten the best opponent they have ever faced, so lets try not to do the usual tearing down of the other as it just devalues the win.
It is overrated. But he's very clearly a talented fighter, just shouldn't be p4p higher than Beterbiev
Of course, because he beat the favorite and the majority, including me, expected that Bivol would lose, why do people always try to find flaws in big victories?
He has the tools to outbox Beterbiev no doubt, but when the ring gets cutoff and he engages will he be able to take it? Plus I don't think this is a fight Bivol has really wanted .
Canelo weighs more than Bivol , hes just shorter .. plus hes on roids .. in light of that the win is excellent.
Bivols greatest win is over a former Welterweight, the Undisputed fight will be nice to actually see Bivol fight a LHW champion for the first time. Bivol is a silky skilled boxer no doubt about that and deserves all the credit and praise if he can beat Betervbiev, however I doubt it as I see Beterbiev walking right through him .
Bivol is a LHW contender who beat the SMW world champion. Not bad, but clearly a LHW contender should be targeting the LHW champ instead of the SMW champ.
I expected him to win but get robbed, so nothing in my estimation of either fighter really changed. He was slightly more dominant than I thought he'd be, but not by much.
Canelo claims that he fought the tougher opponent. Not sure he even believes that. But in light of the fact you have to beat Canelo and this built in "advantage" he has I think he does deserve some credit.
