Juan Manuel Marquez could have been 63-1 if things went his way?

Lets take a look at his losses and draw

Pacquiao vs marquez 1 was a draw hence controversial
Pacquiao vs marquez 2 was a SD loss hence controversial
Pacquiao vs marquez 3 was a MD loss hence controversial
marquez vs chris john was a UD loss but apparently it was very close and many had it for marquez
marquez vs norwood was a UD loss but again many people thought it was close and that marquez actually won
marquez vs javier was a DQ loss so i guess we cant really count that as a loss where his opponent was just better and more skilled
marquez vs tim bradley was SD loss but i felt bradley got the clear win. Marquez was 40 though so you could be lenient on that

marquez vs floyd was a UD loss where he actually clearly lost and even then, he was immediately dragged up 2 weight classes which floyd also didnt make weight for so we can put an asterick on that as well.

All in all, he really only clearly lost a decision once and even then, he had a valid excuse for it. Was he just that good or did he not fight much opposition that could give him trouble stylistically? 63-1 is an amazing record to have. I will say though that marquez vs barrera (barrera was past his best because of styles) was the one fight where it was more in marquez's favor than it should have been (118-109 marquez was a ridiculous scorecard).

He has great accuracy and threw at a decent volume plus he was strong as a bull.

Great fighter and maybe the best combo puncher in recent history.

Why stoop to Pac fans level who claim he is undefeated in slow motion. Not sure how getting knocked out 3 times plays out differently in slow motion.

**** me I just had PTSD flashbacks to 2012.

"Here is why Manny Pacquiao is actually undefeated."
"Why Floyd Mayweather actually has 5 losses"

I think it only got so bad because they were in the same weight classes.
We saw something similar with Canelo-Golovkin and Kovalev-Ward.

And as the years went by, things got more and more heated. FFS, people were adamant that Floyd should have been DQ´d vs Judah.
But something that really stood out to me about that era, as a positive, was how clueless casual sports fans were about boxing records. Sure, everyone knew Floyd was undefeated because it was advertised 24/7. But a lot of people didn´t know Manny had losses prior to getting KO´d by Marquez.
I thought that it was really cool. Because it showcased that records were not as important as wins. I wish promoters would pick up on this and stop obsessing over the 0. They are shooting themselves in the foot.

If his name was Canelo, that sounds about right.

JMM is a great fighter but one of the biggest crybabies I've ever seen.

I've litigated Dinamita's losses before, often.

Javi Durán as far as we know, flukey though it was, counts. Márquez was a rookie and got himself disqualified.

Norwood and Pac 1 could really go either way. Wouldn't say robbery, personally have JMM scraping Pac 1 and losing narrowly to Norwood.

John and Mayweather are legitimate defeats. You could maybe argue for JMM getting a draw with the Indonesian Dragon, but he shouldn't have bulked up so much for PBF and was basically doomed in that one from the get-go.

I had Bradley vs. Márquez a draw - so at worst, a very mild robbery. Very short leap from a draw to a 115-113 split.

IMO he was only robbed outright in Pac II and III, and of course avenged those brutally in the fourth match (in which, ironically, he was doing the absolute worst he'd done against Pac since the second round of their first meeting)

Of his eight blemishes I only take severe issue with two losses (and maybe the Pac draw, even though he did get lucky with a judge's mathematical error to not have an official loss registered; I still think he outboxed Manny pretty much the rest of the way after getting dribbled off the canvas a million times in the opener)

interesting that you think he was robbed in the pac II fight. i thought that fight was Pacquiao's clearest win.

Lot of people have said that over the years, but there were many of us that scored it for JMM live. Freddie Roach said (about I&II, actually) that it "could have gone to either of them". Lots of press row including ESPN had it tight for Márquez. The idea that Pac won the rematch clean is a narrative that's sort of grown in hindsight.

It was a hard fought and competitive but IMO close one for JMM...either 115-112 or 114-113.
