Is Danny "Little Red" Lopez rematching Sal Sanchez the most pointless rematch in boxing history??

    Seriously.

Sanchez gave him an all time beating in their first fight. Watch highlights of the fight here, the first fight up. I get Lopez was a warrior but at some point you have to accept a guy has your number. I can't believe Lopez agreed to have a rematch after taking that kind of punishment.

    It's definitely on the radar.

It was an unnecessary fight given how badly Sanchez beat up Lopez the first time. But there's been loads of other pointless rematches that happened for some reason.

Jose Napoles vs Curtis Cokes 2
Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs Matthew Saad Muhammad 2
Larry Holmes vs Earnie Shavers 2
Manny Pacquiao vs Marco Antonio Barrera 2
Sergey Kovalev vs Jean Pascal 2
Devin Haney vs George Kambosos 2

Testament to how good Napoles and Sanchez were, imo. I consider Cokes and Lopez as top 20 all time at WW and FW.

WBC Featherweight Champion Salvador Sanchez defeated challenger Danny Little Red Lopez in a rematch in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 21 1980, TKO 14.

And I admired Lopez for taking that tumultuous beating in the first fight.

He went through it all again for a rematch. Crazy!

At the time it didn’t seem so ridiculous: Sanchez was an unknown who really dominated Lopez, but Danny had that big punch and had bounced back from bad outings before.

Sal wasn’t regarded as some ATG feather at the time so there was the chance that Lopez had an off night or could make adjustments.

I wouldn't call it pointless when a fighter punched like Lopez.
Though it turned out to be.....

No because sometimes people feel the long established , exciting, tv friendly champ had an off night or was under prepared ... this is right up there w Saad - Braxton ...
