Prime Donald Curry vs Ike Quartey

I'd like to have seen it. Great technical battle, but Curry was just more veersatile than the pretty 1-D(but very effective) Quartey. I'lll take Curry by Decision. Starling vs Quartey would've been good as well.

 

Prime Curry was one hell of a fighter, top 10 welter H2H IMHO. Curry by wide decision.

 

Curry was technically better than Quartey. While Curry had an accurate jab it wasn't as free flowing as Quartey's and certainly not as hard. Both covered up well inside. At his very best I rate Curry as one of the very best welterweights I have ever seen. And that includes Leonard and Napoles. He could fight equally well inside as he could at long range. His defense inside and at mid-range was impressive. He tucked his elbows in tightly within range and just picked his opponents apart. Curry at mid-range was as good as you'll see, especially when balancing things out between offense and defense.

I'd take him to beat Quartey on points.

 

Another vote for Curry. In his short prime I believe he was a great fighter but just didn't have the longevity to be an ATG. I actually think Curry would get inside on Quartey, pick him apart and stop him late. Curry was a very sharp puncher with both hands.

 

Anyone think Ike's power would be an issue for Curry?

If Marlon Starling had a bit more power on him, he probably would have pulled out both Curry fights, and Starling and Quartey do have their similarities with the high guard.

 

I just watched a little bit of Curry-Starling II on video a few minutes ago. Some great action and both very aware defensively.

 

Yes, it's worth mentioning for sure. But Curry had a very tight defensive and I'm pretty sure it would need to be accumulation. Curry had 'radar' range built into him. I reckon he's got the movement, high guard, and overall style to take away Quartey's strengths more often than not. Quartey's 'bazooka' right hand would probably be the most feared weapon between both fighters.

A competitive fight, without question. However, Curry was more efficient and resourceful with his punches.

 

True, though Ike has never been stopped to his credit, despite being badly hurt on quite a few occasions (DLH, Lopez fights in particular). He wasn't the most resilient guy physically, but he had heart and wouldn't lay down. Curry, although in past prime form, did lay down, and so mentally at least, I don't think he's as strong as Quartey, and if Ike could bully him and strike him with some thudding shots like Lloyd did, it could be interesting...

 

Marlon Starling is a very underrated fighter, I don't think that just because he was able to land on Curry it follows that Quartey would be able to.

 

Quartey's offensive abilities were better than Marlon's by the length of a street. The real question is whether Ike's defense can measure up to Marlon's to keep him in the fight and keep him fron getting rocked by Curry's shots. Marlon was quite the defensive fighter, and probably more hurt-proof even when he did get hit than Quartey.

 

I agree completely, but Starling was 'cute' in a way that Ike could never be. I really don't see Quartey being able to find a home for his punches like Starling was able to. The more I think about Curry-Quartey the more I think Curry would get a stoppage.
