Uhh no. Douglas is mediocre as has always been said about him. He simply came to the fight prepared whereas Tyson didn't. They were only ever equal in round 1 with Douglas being the one afraid until he saw he could take Tysons punches, match his speed and land shots on him due to him not using head movement. After that, its like Rooney said in that Douglas's confidence grew which allowed him to overtake Tyson.

Had this been on any other night where Tyson was also prepared, Douglas's confidence would've never gotten as high as it did and he'd have tasted the canvas, quite likely by round 2-3.

    Mental preperation
Regardless of how fit tyson was or wasnt in tokyo physically, there is no way he was mentally ready to go through hell to win against an exceptionally motivated opponent, when he was a 42 to 1 underdog.

That makes a world of a difference, as seen in fury vs ngannou.

Tyson was getting cocky and full of himself, living an extravagant lifestyle, and assuming he was invincible. Also, he had the human snake Don King in his life in place of the deceased Cus D'Amato who would have kept him grounded.

Douglas should never have been a 42 to 1 underdog, he was a legit skilled top 10 fighter and the odds should probably have been around 10-1. It was probably the perfect storm of him being a tough style match up and having a great performance while Mike had a poor one.

I've heard Tyson himself say he was banging Japanese girls non stop leading up to the fight. And, as we all know, sex drains strength from a boxers legs.

Gotta give Buster his props for this fight. He was a man possessed and fought the best fight of his life when it counted. And amazing he did this just after the death of his mother.

Agreeing with others here (and not to take anything away from Douglas), Tyson's loss can be attributed to two words: Don King.

As Iron Mike's by-then-ex-trainer Kevin Rooney said afterward, "Don King has ruined another fighter!"

As Larry Holmes used to enjoy saying, King is the Devil: "That's why he wears his hair that way.... to hide the horns." :)

It was a perfect storm of Tyson not taking the fight seriously, Tyson having a terrible corner, and Douglas being motivated by the death of his mother.
