I don't know if it's a record but Henry Armstrong had 12 title fights in 1939. He went 11-1.

Hard to see anybody going better than Armstrong's 12. Louis had 8 defences in his final year, losing the last to Marciano.

Fighters were on average way busier back then than they are now.

Think he had already lost the title a few years earlier. He had 8 fights in his last year, but only the Marciano one was a title fight

Louis-Marciano was not a title fight. Joe's last title fight was a loss against Ezzard.

No, it wasn’t, Louis was on a comeback, having lost to Charles in a title fight.
Joe was a pale shadow, only in their to pad up Marciano’s record.

Louis had a claim to the title after beating Savold(whod gotten his belt by beating Woodcock) but by this logic Louis would have only had 2 title defenses against Brion and Bivins. Both of those fights were 10 rounders as was the Marciano bout.

I’d hazard a guess it was Armstrong or Greb?

That’s what I always thought also but when Louis fought Savold he was was recognised as the Heavyweight Champion by the BBBC,when Louis won in the 6th round he was then recognised by them as Heavyweight Champion until he lost to Marciano,I never knew this myself until I looked it up .
