Owner of the first gym I ever went to told all the guys he trained when they were getting started: “Don’t go around telling people you’re a boxer. “If you’re good enough, everybody is going to know it. “If you’re not, you won’t want them to know it.” In conversation he told me his real reason was that when you go around telling everybody you’re a boxer, someone will always want to try you. Sooner or later that’s always going to end up bad — somebody pulls a weapon on you, or you beat someone up and they end up calling the police, or you break your hand in a street fight or suffer some other injury and you miss out on fights. Nothing good comes of it.
