Fighters who said they'd beat ATGs of earlier eras?

Holmes is an entirely different kettle of fish. Rarely is this guy not openly shitting on great fighters.

Do you see this kind of behaviour from Marciano? From Ali? Foreman, or Tyson? The guy is a buffoon, simply put. No greatest Heavyweight ever on my list loses to bloody Tim Witherspoon or nearly gets himself KO’d by Renaldo Snipes.

 

Then he got beat up by a roided-out 37-year-old MMA fighter who had never boxed a day in his life.

 

Perhaps, but I really don't hold Holmes ATG heavyweight views against him. Holmes was about the only one not to respect past greats, even dead ones, Ali may of said he could of whip Louis and Jeffries (There is film of this) but he never said they could not carry his jock strap, though he believes he is better than they were in the ring, he still shows respect to em as champions of their era.

 

I had a little trouble with the audio & playback but did I get this right? Looked like he said he’d give them both the fight of their life but did he go further than that?

 

Dempsey was very respectful of the Heavyweights that came before him. He named Jack Johnson, Fitzsimmons, Langford, Jeffries and Peter Jackson in his top 12 list and spoke very highly of John L. Sullivan. He was also very complimentary of Louis (though he questioned his chin on occassion) and Marciano.

 

That was about it, I think Marciano hinted he could beat em, but was not going to out right say it.

 

How do you see Marciano faring against Dempsey & the real Louis. I think both are too good for him.

 

That’s really nothing like Larry Holmes then, so I don’t see your comparison.

 

I think vs Louis, Marciano needs to turn it into a UGLY fight to win this one if he is going to win, he can't have Louis get the range and really smoother him so his short punches would have little effect. As for Dempsey this is one I think can go either way, the longer it goes, I think Marciano gets the edge in the later rounds.

 

Holmes went a little too far, but Marciano had a good middle ground in their comments on the question.

 

I agree. He gets KO'd by both.
Dempsey would probably do the job quicker, I think Louis would take some time before putting him away.

 

Personally I’m a little baffled by how many people pick Marciano to beat Dempsey. The latter was better in the vast majority of categories & started a lot faster. He & Louis would get Marciano out of there.

 

I think it comes down to blasted people out fast vs the tiring out of later rounds. I do think if you put a fresh Marciano in round 4 vs Dempsey in the Willard fight, you see Marciano taking over. I do think Marciano's late punch output and amazing stamina will really give him the edge vs Dempsey in a 15 round fight if it passes the early rounds.

 

Yes, he had his advantages - stamina certainly, chin & heart, probably, but Dempsey wasn’t especially lacking in these areas, whereas I see Dempsey’s advantages too numerous, & in a few cases, too big in nature.

It would be a massive fight, regardless. Imagine the ticket prices.
