Lamon Brewster beat Wladimir Klitschko to win the vacant WBO title in 2004 after Wlad all but passed out in between rounds during their fight. There are conspiracy theories which suggest that Klitschko was drugged. How true are they?

They are bull**** in my opinion. Wlad went all-out to destroy Brewster and blew his wad big time. I've seen big muscular guys in MMA do the same. Shane Carwin was blasting the **** out of Brock Lesnar for most of their match and then suddenly caved in. Their muscles go into a condition called lactic acidosis and it probably feels like being poisoned.

Some of Wlad’s fans have OD’d on copium trying to find ways around this loss.

    This.

I remember folks from Team Klitschko saying that one of his cornermen put too much Vaseline on his body, which clogged his pores and trapped his body heat, and resulted in Wlad gassing out in that one.

Almost certainly. Wlad proved the proper, undrugged outcome in the rematch.

I feel Wlad paced himself much better in the rematch ...

I think your original explanation above is what happened. He simply punched himself out. The drugged/too much Vaseline excuses are Foremanesque IMO.

Nevertheless, the "Aftermath" section of this wiki article is an interesting read:

He probably punched himself out. It was like a shorter version of David Izon-Derrick Jefferson (or even the Purrity fight) where one guy beats the crap out of the other but gasses out and gets stopped not too long after that.

Or maybe had some sort of panic attack.

I remember Thomas Hauser wrote an article at the time that refuting a lot of the silly “evidence” that Wlad was drugged.

How do we know Brewster wasn’t drugged in the rematch? Seems suspicious.

Because Brewster got the crap kicked out of him for most of the first fight and the second fight was just a continuation of that. Brewster had a great chin and big courage but he was going to get some kind of brain damage if they hadn't pulled the plug.

What happened is the ref went into to Wlads corner between rounds and told him he wasn't allowing any more holding.

That put Wlad on the back foot and he began to over use his jab because he never had any punch variety. That tired him out and allowed Brewster to find openings. Notably a big hook to the body in round 4. Then this big hook to the head

It was all over for Wlad after that. Couldn't recover form those big hits.

Brewster had to be inactive , medically unfit to box and half blind for Wlad to win a pointless rematch

The first fight was prime vs prime and Wlad got destroyed.
