Felix Savon was just about the best amateur I have seen. In any weight class. I think he'd have been undisputed HW champion had he turned pro.
Besides Napoles, Gavilan, and Rodriguez I always liked Joel Casamayor and Yuriorkis Gamboa. Joel Casamayor is underrated and had been in some awesome fights such as Katsidis, JMM, Castillo, Freitas, Campbell and his trilogy with Corrales. Yuriorkis Gamboa was very exciting, had so much physical talents, and showed some heart. Just a shame that his career didn’t go anywhere and he never seemed to improve his defense as he got older.
Ultiminio Ramos also was super exciting. Perhaps the most entertaining of all Cuban fighters? A real hero in Mexico much like Mantequilla.
I was hoping and expecting rigondeaux to go down as one of and possibly best Cuban ever. He should never have took the lomachenko fight he was too small and it killed any hype or progress he seemed to be making.
The truth is that his resume was limited due to guys like Santa Cruz, Frampton and the other Brits not wanting to fight him, in addition to questionable actions by his promoters and the networks. Dickens and Donaire forever deserve respect for stepping up to the plate. Lomachenko got Rigondeaux paid and I don't blame him for taking it.
