I look at Wilder and I say the same thing I always have said. Wilder from his looks, is the heavyweight Tommy Hearns.

Do you think if Steward trained him that he would ave potentially beaten Fury and continued to run the division

Yes.Even if he'd stayed with Mark Breland and actually listened to and respected him, he could've become a great fighter.

He would've needed to start earlier, though.

He could have been much better but still I always felt he struggled to listen to trainers and I think Fury was always wrong for him. He still never beat anyone of note except Ortiz so it’s hard to gauge what his level was actually for most of his career anyway.

No. Wilder doesn't have the mental aptitude to humble himself and become a student. He deludes himself into thinking he knows everything about boxing and is better than everyone, that's why Malik Scott has to make all these crazy statements about Wilder being greater than Ali and being the harder puncher ever.

Only if he started earlier and was with Steward from the beginning.

Wilder is always well conditioned, definitely puts in the work, has a lot of solid athletic attributes, is tall with a good reach, and hits very hard

I think that's a very good Baseline with a lot of potential. However he was an Olympian and a top heavyweight for a long time and didn't really improve and probably had a lot of exposure to good coaching and opportunities to be trained by the best.

At the time that it happened I wasn't that upset that he fired Mark Breland. They did worse in the second fight than they did in the first and he stopped improving. It's not totally crazy to fire a coach after something like that. However I think him hiring Scott was a big mistake. He briefly showed some improvement early on in the third Fury fight coming out behind his job and going to the body. But as soon as the fight broke out into a war it exposed all of his problems. He also looked horribly unprepared for Joseph Parker. It would be one thing if he lost a competitive decision or dropped Parker or hurt him a couple times sort of like the first Fury fight. But he was totally out of his depth in there and never got any sort of momentum never looked comfortable I don't remember him Landing many significant punches.

In short I think Wilder has a very good base To build off of With lots of potential.

No you can have the best trainer on the planet but you still have to be receptive to what they are teaching. According to Breland Wilder never liked to work on things he struggled with he preferred to work on his strengths as it was easier. That's not the mindset of an athlete that wants to learn and improve.

Physically yeah, that’s not even half the battle though. Steward needed more discipline and control from his fighters and less arrogance. He did actually have Wilder in several camps and did some training early on in his career, I’m confident there’s some footage around.

    Wilder was just untrainable...

He's too stubborn and self absorbed, plus not very bright - that means he wouldn't have listened and even if he did, it wouldn't have stuck.

Physically he had all the attributes, but that's not enough.

In reputation terms, he's already exceeded what his limitations allowed him to be - by ducking contenders until he was old enough to be assumed his prime was gone, he created an illusion of being a top fighter... When in truth he was just a chicken-legged can crushing sideshow act

He lacks the intangibles. He's a bit of a mental midget.
