I understand he was young but WHY did he try to outbox and counter punch mayweather?

IT was just a horrible gameplan.

He tried outboxing the faster smaller man when he should've just applied constant pressure

To make a bunch of money.
The Canelo from GGG II to Plant would beat up any version of Floyd ever. And Floyd knows that and he hates it.

His game plan was to use his physicality to win some rounds, and, then coast the second half of the fight so that he could lose. Just like he and Floyd likely agreed to before the fight ever started.

Canelo thought the reason Floyd always won bc nobody tried to outbox him and instead tried to fight him. He learned a lot that day

    But he did.
Floyd just completely outclassed him. Floyd came out immediately applying pressure, which I bet caught Alvarez off guard. Just look how he starts dancing 10 seconds into the first round, looking to reset himself. Floyd in turn started chasing after him, and quite literally so.

Alvarez had some right ideas that night.
He started off jabbing to the body, which is a must. He also utilized feints and he was very cautious of Floyd´s setups. Floyd loved to lean over the front leg to bait a counter punching opportunity. Canelo did his best not to fall for it. He would often just feint to get Floyd out of position.
And Canelo kept his jab, even when Floyd was toying with him at times. He never stopped utilizing it.
In the opening round, Canelo mainly targeted the body. When he did aim his right hand at Floyd´s head, he did so when Floyd was bending low. Smart move on Canelo´s part as Floyd had few counter opportunities from that position and if Canelo caught him, Floyd would have a difficult time resetting himself into a better position.

Canelo had a lot of good ideas and he utilized them, but in the end he got completely outclassed. Lack of head movement and also poor footwork cost him big that night.
Canelo´s jab was a bit basic too. A simple triple jab at times would have done wonders. Or jabbing at the body and the head in succession. There was very little variety to it on that night. Even when he landed clean on Floyd, Floyd had the footwork to disengage, mitigating any serious followup danger.

They fought. Floyd won easily. Everything else is just you coping. And it's pretty funny.

Not sure if that Canelo would have ever beaten Floyd but he would have given himself a better chance if he had used constant pressure like Maidan and Castillo used. Instead he tried to outbox Floyd. Bad plan.
