I've only seen four of his fight. His two fights with Fenech, and his fights against Sweat Pea & Sanchez. He was 1-3 in those fights (He lost to Fenech in their first fight) The other two fights were against all-time greats. So how good was Nelson?

Nelson wasn't a good fighter. He was a great fighter. I recommend you watch more of his bouts.

Azumah would clean out the 126-130 pound divisions today with ease before jumping in at 135

I wouldn’t call him an ATG but he was heading in that direction. At 13-0 he was nearly taking Sal Sánchez the distance in a gruelling fight, that’s insane. It is not a mark against Sánchez, but as time would prove, an early glimpse at how damn good Nelson would prove to be.

    Love him.

He was a tremendous fighter who could do it all. He could box, he could brawl, he could punch, he had a good chin and a terrific heart as well as great strength.

He only lost to two fighters when he was at or near his peak - Sanchez was realistically before he was in his prime but he fought brilliantly to give Sanchez all he could handle. He lost convincingly to Whitaker 8 years later.

He was also probably a bit lucky to get the nod in the first fight with Mario Martinez but showed he was a great learner and took Martinez out in the rematch. Same thing with the Fenech fights.

At his best he was an awesome boxer-puncher who could make adjustments in fights and was a lot of fun to watch as well.

That’s a high bar not to call him an ATG.

Mario Martinez had hurt his right hand in the rematch and I think you can tell which round when you watch the fight with Azuhma Nelson.

Azumah Nelson encapsulated just about everything that made a great fighter. He had Heart, stamina, durability, power, fast hands, and great skills. Was always in top condition too. What was equally important is that he was exciting to watch. I don’t know how to assign him a rating among other greats but my thinking is that he would have been a handful for just about anybody

Terrific fighter. Always rebounded from "losses" to Martinez and Fenech with resounding performances.

Don´t think he gets enough credit for the Sanchez fight. Boxed brilliantly against an ATG, would´ve probably won if over 12.

The way he got rid of Gomez was amazing, seemed effortless.

Had an excellent second career against Ruelas and Leija. Dominating performances against younger opponents who had given him trouble previously.

His visits to Britain were memorable, his one punch 1st ko of classy Pat Cowdell and the 12 round stoppage of the incredible brave Jim McDonnell.

Wish he had fought McGuigan in a third stop at our shores. Barry didn´t want anything to do with Azumah.

Exceptional ... gave Sanchez the fight of his life as a novice on short notice, crushed Fenech and Gomez in their home towns ... a beast , had it all, speed, chin, power, strength, conditioning, heart .... a true warrior .

Definitely an all time great. Great skills and his upper body was like a welterweight's.
