Because people will always want to prove themselves. We'll never make boxing safe, we can only make it as safe as possible.
I know what you're saying and this isn't the first day I've found myself thinking the same thing. The last time was the woman that Hannah Rankin fought and before that Mike Towell. I was in the crowd for the Hannah Rankin fight. Fortunately the woman the Rankin fought did pull through. I'm sure, I'm sure, that boxing does more good than bad. There's stats on boxers deaths but there's no stats for how many thousands of potentially wayward young men and women that boxing actually saves. RIP champ.
I wouldn't be so sure it was nothing to do with anything. Concussions can cause seizures, wouldn't at all be surprised if the years of punishment played a role here. RIP
Gutted. I remember when Bradley Stone died (saw various of his fights on Eurosport and his 1st loss) I nearly gave up this sport. Gives you a real respect for the men and women who give so much (be they champions or journeyman) for our entertainment. Makes me even angrier when mugs like Conor Benn try to make up their lack of talent by cheating and possibly hurting a fellow boxer who hasn´t cheated. Conor and his promoter should be locked up. RIP Champ
Very good post. The Eduard Gutknecht pasting against Groves is also very fresh and raw for me with him left suffering significant life changing injuries while being simply abandoned/ignored by people in the sport. How Terry O'Connor can sleep at night watching that pounding close up is beyond me. More loot should be diverted to help the families of the deceased and badly injured in the ring.
Completely agree. One of the last fights I saw in person was Benn-McClelland. I was gutted at how Gerald ended up. I now know he wasn´t that great a person (animal cruelty) but nonetheless I wouldn´t wish that on anyone except a few cases. I hope that there is an insurance policy in place that helps these fighters and their families you end up looking after them. I remember a very uncomfortable documentary with Jerry Quarry (and Mike to a lesser extent) where you could see his demencia and the difficulty their families where having caring for him especially since all their ring earnings had disappeared.
