Does Anyone Else Really Dislike The Rocky Movies?!!

The first one was great.

The street level gritiness
The characterization
The American Dream - a once in a lifetime opportunity to capture it - to be somebody and know that one's life is not a waste.

 

My favorite soundtracks from any movie is Rocky 4 and Vision Quest

 

Agree not only on the soundtrack but also really liked the movie Vision Quest.

 

The only Rocky I've seen is 4 I think? Whichever one has Rocky beating Drago. Which one does he climb the steps?

 

I mentioned this a while ago in another thread about the Rocky series. A gigantic plot hole in that movie is during that fight, where it is implied that Rocky could have saved Apollo from being beaten to death (sorry for the spoiler in an almost 40 year old movie) by throwing in the towel. Drago had just shoved the ref aside seconds before when he tried to stop the fight himself... It's not credible that if an actual referee couldn't stop Drago's rampage, a towel would?

 

The deleted scenes and Creed 2 show that the reason Rocky feels guilty is that Apollo took the fight only because Rocky refused it. Not because of the towel.

 

In 1976 I was driving a taxi in San Francisco when I picked up a guy who was raving about a new film he'd just seen called "Rocky". He said Sylvester Stallone was the greatest young acting talent since Brando! People get overly enthusiastic sometimes. I'm not a fan of Sly but I respect his courage and grit for creating something from nothing and capitalizing on it beyond what anyone could've dreamed.

 

The movies proved, sadly just a touch late, how blatantly robbed of his Championship my man Joe Frazier was in his rigged bout with George Foreman. Given another thirteen rounds Joe would have pulled it out like in Rocky IV!

 

Rocky 3 is a work of art.

I mean, Buster Douglas.

 

First was great. Realistic. A journeyman with some talent takes training seriously for the first time, gives an elite fighter who doesn't take training seriously a real scare. Happened to multiple of the greats, and that one time in Tokyo, dude even won.

The second depicted a scenario that's probably happened to many fighters -- his wife doesn't want him to continue with fighting, but he doesn't feel like he can earn a living any other way, and not being supported by his wife is really messing with his head. Rocky is training and looking like **** until Adrian almost dies, wakes up, tells him she wants him to win. Then it's on, his fire is lit.

The third depicted a really common scenario. The champ gets rich, comfortable, loses his edge, loses his title. The attempt at regaining it usually doesn't work in real life, because the guy who just lost is still rich and comfortable (or just because the guy got old), but hey, it's a movie.

Fourth is dumb. Rah rah cold war, and the thing is half montages. Really lazy.

Fifth isn't worth mentioning.

Rocky Balboa does a lot of character building, catchup, etc. The fight was unrealistic because Rocky in it was about 20 years too old to do what he actually did, but there's a long history of old champs coming out of retirement for one reason or another, and then giving the current guy a good fight. Just ask Evander Holyfield how much fun it is fighting old champs whose fire got re-lit.

First Creed movie was solid. Second was dumb, but the B-plot was fun I guess.

 

There are some similarities, but Buster Douglas has already fought for the IBF belt against Tony Tucker.

 

I get that Douglas was no journeyman with a bit of talent, he was a contender with a ton of talent let down by a lazy streak. But still. I'd bet most who saw the fight had no idea who he was.
