What was the real weight of both boxers on the night?

 

Either way confirms they were about the same size with Hanie actually being bigger

I think the last one is probably the most accurate- saw Ryan on the valuetainment podcast he said he weighed around 160 on fight night…. Here is a snippet

Yeah, here are the officially recorded event weights for Haney and Prograis (Haney’s last fight at an official “140 lbs”)

Tbh, unless I read confirmation (as per below), I wouldn’t have believed that a fighter, specifically a Jr Welter, could put on a huge 25 lbs after the official weigh in.

Prograis has stated that while he has no proof, he wondered if Haney used an IV (illegal) to rehydrate, etc. as much as he did.

I would’ve thought testing for minimally acceptable hydration levels might be a solution in part - but apparently they already do that - I guess it comes down to how low they allow for.

Isn’t the argument tho that cutting those 3 pounds takes a lot out of you? I think Haney lost because he couldn’t keep his right hand up to defend the left hook but I can’t disagree with those who say not having to cut those 3 extra pounds gives you a massive advantage.

 

Ryan looked heavier and bigger. That's why he could do a demolition job on David.

 

I'll never comprehend how a 140 pound guy can grow 25 pounds within 24 hours. WTF was he drinking.....liquid lead?

 

The answer is he's not a 140-pound guy.

He's not growing 20 or 25 pounds. He's just going back up to his natural fit weight.

The "unnatural part" is the drying out 20 pounds below his natural fighting weight so he can stand on a scale for the 10 seconds you stand on the scale ...

That's the crazy part.

Because neither of them could actually compete in that division if they had to weigh 140 or below when they got in the ring.

It's all ass-backwards.

In all likelihood, you've never seen Devin Haney box in the ring as a pro weighing below 140.

Sure, he hopped on a scale the day before (almost a day and a half before) his whole career and made an arbitrary weight cut weight for a couple seconds ... but by the time he got in the ring he was always well above that.

If he was boxing in the 60s or 70s, when they held weigh-ins in the late afternoon the day of the fight, he'd have looked exactly as he's always looked in the ring, but he'd have been a middleweight his entire career fighting actual middleweights from that era. (And probably not doing so great.)

 

Divisions are not set for fight night but for weigh-in. All you need to do is to make the weight limit on Friday and you belong in that division.

Draining part is correct.

 

It's not healthy for the long term to drain yourself so much. Kidneys have to be screaming for liquids. These guys are really hurting themselves and I give some props to Garcia for not killing himself to lose those last 3 pounds. The ProBox guys, Mags, Bradley, Alghieri, all talked about how much effort it takes to drop those last pounds after and on top of weeks of intensive training.

Guys like Hatton fattened up like a cow between fights. We all know about Duran getting out of shape after Leonard I and how Ray took advantage of Roberto for forcing the rematch quickly, knowing Duran was a pig and would have a real hard time jjust getting in shape much less reaching a contract weight.

 

I don't think those 3 pounds would have made that much of a difference, it would have still been the same outcome imo. Garcia did look bigger than Haney on fight night though.

 

Thanks. Not surprised that Haney could be bigger in the ring - and second set of numbers seems more accurate. They definitely looked like They were in the 160s.
Who weighed them though? Commision? Is it the stanard now? I very rarely see fight-day weight numbers released in the last couple years.

 

Hey Buddy, I posted “event” (day of the fight) weights for Haney’s last fight earlier in this thread - as recorded by the Cal. State Athletic Commission.

Not sure if all commissions do it and it seems you do have to scratch for the details at any rate. Anyway, it was certified that Haney went from 140 to 165 for that fight - about an 18% mark up from the official weigh in.
