Fury is the overall better fighter though, and should win by decision...

I’ve always liked Gerry Cooney and I’m not a huge fan of Fury. But I can’t make Cooney the favorite. For all his shortcomings, Tyson Fury survived the very best Deontay Wilder threw at him in three fights and still won at least two of them. Meanwhile Gerry Cooney only went past the 8th round once in his career and wasn’t much for taking it. He had plenty of punching power but I don’t know if it would be enough. And it would be the first time in Cooney’s career that he’d be facing a man who had the size advantage over him.

To be fair, it was the only time he ever had to go past the 8th round up to that point, and that was when he was suffering from ring rust which is the reason he tired soon after imo

I'm happy to see Fury the Grotesque dethroned. He'd be perfect as the carnival clown egging people on to throw baseballs at the target and give him a dunking.

No a fan of Fury at all, but I think he wins this one.

Of course, we are talking about "Peak" Fury: relatively free of alcohol/drugs, reasonably trained and at acceptable weight.

My enduring memory of Cooney is him being dropped like a sack of potatoes by Big George.

I am not saying Fury's power is in the same solar system than Big George, but he should be able to beat Cooney.

Cooney gives a decent fight and sparks Fury a couple of times, but ultimately he lacks the skills to prevail.

The Clown king wins this one.

I really think that the victory of Usyk over Tyson Fury was a really good win, but when the honeymoon feeling of it wears off, we need to see more of Usyk as undisputed World Heavyweight Champion to properly judge and match him against other past greats. Remember the honeymoon period when Andy Ruiz upset Anthony Joshua a few years back, everyone had Ruiz against every past great, with the exception of the almighty God himself. It is way too early to make assumptions about greatness. Remember Ruiz was supposed to be great too, he demolished an unbeatable Joshua too.

Cooney never competed against current top fighters. He cleaned up the divisions of older guys but Holmes and Spinks were just too good, and Tyson Fury would be also. Fury would stop him in 8 round or so.

Fury's best win is over an older guy also in Wladimir who was 40.

comping Vlad to Cooney? Vlad at 40 was still Vlad. Cooney, as much as I respected his power and a decent jab was never championship material. They talked of a Cooney/Weaver fight, which would have been interesting to see if Cooney could have won tthe title with a less formidle champ.
