Marvelous Marvin Hagler moves up to fight WBC Champion John Conteh, 175 lbs, 15 rounds, both prime. A very talented poster gave me this idea about great fighters moving up to better their legacy's. Who wins and why in this fantasy matchup?

Going to have to comment more on the fight later, but wanted to say that Hagler packing on 15lbs of muscle is one of my favorite what ifs, would be an absolute animal, perhaps taking on more bullying offense tactics

Hagler packing on 15 more pounds to fight either Victor Galindez or Bob Foster would be interesting to see.

Personally I think Hagler was way too small to jump to 175.

Hagler is too small to compete at Light Heavyweight he was a perfectly sized Middleweight and not big at the weight.

Conteh by UD Hagler isn't beating Conteh at Light Heavyweight.

This is hard to answer because John Conteh was a huge (across the shoulders) LHW, he was like a CW really and could outbox. Hagler wasn't even a big MW. I'd like to think Hagler wins this because although Conteh was big and good, there were several MW's of that stature that Hagler beat down. But again..................they were MW's

I think Hagler could've fought at JMW and MW tbh, I question if he would've even been able to move to SMW (had it existed), let alone LHW.

Holyfield was probably too small and the perfect sized cruiser also

in the Past he would have moved up, just as all other Boxers did... it just goes to show you the difference in Era's that Hagler and many others didn't.

Hello there,Richard. As a lot of others think,Marvin had the perfect frame for middleweight. As Hagler, himself, put it - "A legit middleweight" no way could he have fought at maximum errectiveness at 175lbs. John Conteh - a lt.heavy bordering on greatness, would have won.

C'mon now Stevie, be fair, is there any weight you'd be comfortable fighting at with maximum errectiveness?

Can you imagine Liston fighting in such a condition? If people thought his jab was difficult to circumnavigate with his enormous reach......

There was a reason Hagler never ventured past the middleweight division. He was a runty middleweight with a solid build that wouldn't translate well at Light heavyweight, certainly not against a top-notch fighter. Conteh was a masterful fighter who unfortunately had fragile hands. He had more than enough skills though to soundly outbox and outfight Hagler. Conteh by easy decision.
