Another daily poll, i kinda only know this dude from a BLTV classic breakdown on his fight vs mike but he seemed to have had a promising career has a prospect champion up until he started beefing with mike, and his gang life of course. Anything else notable about him? Also if u cant tell im running out of boxers for these polls haha, need to start studying some new guys.
Before fighting Tyson he was a top 20 at best. His only notable fight had been a clear UD loss to Trevor Berbick. He had never beaten anyone close to the top 10. He was a prospect from 1980-1982 but inactivity and poor performances had him pretty much off the radar even before the Berbick fight. He was a loud mouth street punk so he got much more attention than his ring performances merited He had size, reach, decent movement, but little power or defense. He failed to improve much after turning pro due to lack of discipline which ******ed his development. He survived the distance with Tyson by tying him up and his very solid chin. He was not competitive at all. Tillis was much more competitive against Tyson just before Tyson faced Green
Well, for starters, he probably doesn't make a top 20 list of boxers named Green let alone a top 20 all time list. As an amateur, he was incredibly impressive. He won the New York Gold Gloves four times in a time when that was one of the more prestigious awards you can win in amateur boxing. Pro career never panned out. Incredible chin, never down if I recall. Only TKO loss was when he refused to throw punches in a match, ala Oliver McCall. More well known for his street fight for Mike Tyson and his history of drugs, the latter which took away any chance of a decent pro career.
If i remember correctly he threatened to assassinate someone very important in the boxing scene at the time, i think it was don king maybe?
I respect every man who gets in the ring but Mitch Green was really not much more then a wiry arm puncher with a good chin. Mitch didn’t do bad for himself, shouldn’t hang his head low but he wasn’t “special” just a decent professional who tried hard from what I’ve seen of him.
Green was the type of boxer who if you break down his skills he should have been a contender or even a belt holder, achieving a Tony Tucker type of relative success, if you like. Size and movement was there, he had a good jab, strong chin and was a decent counterpuncher. From what I recall of him, he had pretty quick hands too. So what on earth went wrong? He was hampered by lack of HW power, poor mentality in terms of a disciplined mind, and an inconsistency in performances that separate the great from the good and the good from the average. The best I can say about him was he had the potential but didn’t live up to it.
He was very fast, never developed the skills he had. Early on, had a draw with Robert Evan's, someone who Tucker stop around a month or two later. Seemed to have had a chaotic life outside the ring which definitely affected him.
The amazing thing is from what I've seen on Youtube he turned his life around, found religion of sorts and seems somewhat grounded ...
I think that is a different Mitch Green. I have seen a couple of recent ones with him and Tim Witherspoon, still looks the same albeit older of course.
They used to say about Mitch ''Blood'' Green that he greened blood and he blooded green. Because ole Mitch Green was mighty mean.
I have seen recent videos with Mitch with the same hair and gear, way different from that Mitch. Check again.
