I was listening to the guys on ProBox talking about great rivalries of the past and when Barrera Morales came up, Chris Algieri described it as class warfare and mentioned that the two guys came from very different backgrounds. I wasn't aware of that angle, what were these guys' socioeconomic backgrounds?
Barrera came from a very good background, he was from a tough and scrappy neighbourhood but he wasn't struggling for money or anything like that, his father made movies if I recall correctly, and Barrera even studied law while fighting. Morales on the other hand came fron La Zona Norte of Tijuana, a place notorious for prostitution and drug abuse. What's a bit odd is how their personalities turned out. Barrera was a very mean little **** for someone that came from an upper middle class family, and the less privilleged Morales was notorious for his pride, even turning southpaw against Pacquiao just to prove that he could do it better. These two were made for each other.
I was a fan of his at one time but yes, he lost me along the way. His, “performance” in the Pacquiao rematch was beyond appalling, as was his conduct in & out of the ring on one too many occasions.
