    50 years ago today, Rodrigo Valdes stopped Bennie Briscoe in round 7 in Monte Carlo, Monaco. This fight was for the vacant WBC World Middleweight Title as rumors were circulating that champion Carlos Monzon had retired, which was not true. The WBC pitted both Valdes and Briscoe to fight for the title as rumor had it that Monzon wanted to spend his spare time making motion pictures in his native Argentina. Take a look at the bout on You tube, it was televised by ABC's Wide World Of Sports.

    Fight 2. Tremendous punch out.

    Surreal to see Briscoe KO’d like that. Within the same shock realm of seeing Duran KO’d by Hearns. Something you literally have to see for yourself to believe it.

    Monzon said Briscoe’s was the hardest head he had ever punched. I guess that was a compliment of sorts. :D

    I wished the was a more pristine version of the fight but this was the best one I could find: -

    I saw it live on ABC's Wide World Of Sports that Saturday afternoon, Keith Jackson did the commentating, I really thought that Carlos Monzon had retired as Jackson has said during the bout, but that sharp right hand that Valdes landed on Briscoe was classic, Bennie looked like he was intoxicated when he arose and fell into the referee's arms.
