Cleveland Big Cat Williams forgave Texas State Trooper Dale Witten for the shooting incident in 1964. I just saw the short documentary on You Tube, Big Cat still had to spend time in Jail for the assault on a law enforcement officer. While he was hospitalized, Sonny Liston used to visit the Big Cat in the hospital.

I read that Williams resisted the arrest because he thought the cop would bring him somewhere to be lynched. Doesn't seem far fetched about a black man driving around in a sports car in 1964 in Texas.

Yeah, I read somewhere, I believe it was in a Ring Magazine, that Williams stated that it was a jail in Texas called "Tomball".

It shows what type of man, the Big Cat was.
Better sometimes to forgive than hold a grudge for years, it does you no good.

You are right, who wants to carry that weighted Grudge around for the rest of their lives?, it can get mighty heavy.

I can’t get over the Dr’s crazy optimism re Williams eventually being good to fight again after taking the bullet. .

I mean, sure, Williams did fight again but I think the Doc’s confidence was woefully misplaced given the damage, given that Williams was near death and the extensive surgery required not just to repair him but to also save his life.

The Dr’s forecast, as at the time, really didn’t make sense imo. He basically predicted what was, a miraculous recovery full stop BUT also, foresaw Cleve somehow climbing back into the ring.

For material evidence against the Dr’s opinion, Williams left leg (from which an artery was removed to replace one in the abdomen) was clearly withered as compared to the right leg.

Alls fair in love, war and boxing, but also note that Ali, not reputed for body punching, was considerate enough to fire more than a few jabs into Cleve’s belly - clearly understanding it to be a vulnerable target area.

Face it Pug, Cleveland Williams would never be the same again after he was shot on Nov 30 1964.

That’s exactly how I see it also Rich. Of course he had the dialysis treatment later in life as a consequence - and, in tragic irony, was hit and killed by a car while crossing the road after one such treatment.

I sure can understand how The Big Cat must have felt doing the Dialysis Treatments later in life, I do Dialysis 3 days a week, Mon, Weds, and Friday for 3 and a half hours, this started after my open heart surgery to replace my Aortic Valve with a plastic one on Jan 21 2020. I attend from 10:00 Am to 1:30 Pm.
