I have very little knowledge of the history of amateur boxing compared to the pro game. I know some names like Savon, Teofilo, Papp, or Popenchenko but my knowledge beyond that is little and I've watched very few amateur fights. Anyone know of the best amateur fights/performances?

Mark Breland was a savant as an amateur. 5 consecutive New York Golden Gloves I believe.

Nowadays baring a few exceptions the amateur scene is full of dancers playing tag. One of those exceptions is Oleksandr Khyzhnniak he always brings the heat. A shame he probably will never turn pro.

This fight with Russian Sosoulin who has turned pro is a war.

Jeremy Williams vs. Ko Yo-Da. Don't watch much amateur boxing, but happened to catch that one live on TV back when it happened. Excellent fight.

Regilio Tuur-Kelcie Banks Banks was supposed to be the next Whittaker. beat a host of future pro World champions as an amateur. Probably stayed too long as an amateur but this fight ruined him. Tuur was a good fighter and managed to briefly reign as WBO champ.

Tuur-Banks was an absolutely brutal KO. Banks was motionless for several minutes.

Other good ones from that same Olympics, Ray Mercer's one round shootout vs. Baek Hyun-Man, and Todd Foster vs. Chung Jin-Chul. The riot after Alexander Hristov beat his Korean opponent, and Anothony Hembrick being DQ'd for missing the bus were other notables.

Evander Holyfield and Ricky Womack had a kind of Ali-Frazier type amateur rivalry, only they fought six times instead of three (with Holy winning four).

Womack was as troubled as he was promising as a prospect, and ended up serving 15 years for armed robbery. He had a few pro fights after getting out of prison and then committed suicide, sadly.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ric...ield later recalled:,to make the Olympic team.

The 96' Olympics had Tarver vs Jirov at light heavy in war and David Reid's sensational comeback knockout win for the gold medal. Both were excellent fights.

    Join the club...

The amateur game doesnt get as much coverage unless its the Olympics or maybe the nationals...

I dont remember seeing an amateur fight live since the 1992 Olympics.

Im sure I have, because i mean the Olympics show many fights and that, basketball and gymnastics are my summer olympic interests (figure skating and sometimes ice hockey in the winter ones)..i just dont remember anything that stands out.

That mentioned, on the Argentine telecasts on Saturday nights of pro boxing, they sometimes show many amateur fights, some of them, i cant tell you names because there are a lot of young boxers there but some of the fights are good. Some of the semi-pro world series of boxing fights were good also.

Same Olympics again, here's the guy Mercer knocked out for the Gold Medal, Baek Hyun-Man, knocking out a noticeably skinnier looking Andrew Golota...
