Thanks Rummy, great video as always. Agree with your interpretation that short retirements are generally ignored by the public, even if a champion has been crowned in their absence. Of course, that’s not to say it’s right, and you could argue the toss about many of these situations. I do think that there’s a certain reverence given to the lineal title as if it is free from the politics which surrounds the alphabet belts. In reality in the absence of sanctioning bodies there is still debate and disagreement about who the real champion is. It’s not clear how long a retirement can be before a returning champion is no longer recognised as such. The absence of mandatory contenders means champions can be unranked by Ring, TBRB etc. but remain as champion. For example Foreman’s second reign. It also means that top contenders can be ignored by the champion, for example Harry Wills. It’s also unclear how to crown a new champion, as you mention with the disagreements about Ezzard Charles. I think lineal is a useful tool to help determine the true champion, but it shouldn’t be the only tool. I don’t consider Shannon Briggs to have ever been the true champion, but he was the lineal champ.

Great Rummy obviously you put a lot of work into it, but it's all sound and fury,signifying practically nothing. Way too many breaks in the lineage, too many so and so handed the belt to so and so, too many retirements, too many belts, organizations, "people's champ" etc. Usyk is undisputed, let's all rejoice he actually accomplished this feat. And he will be the "people's champ" only after the IBF strips him.
No. Honestly, I've been waiting years for somebody to beat Fury so that I could revisit this. Furthermore, I honestly believed Fury would beat Usyk, so I did no prep for this until after the fight.
I agree on more or less all of what you're saying here, and the lineage is certainly not an exact science. But I still find that stuff all fascinating, even if it isn't the be-all and end-all. As for the length of retirement, based on historical precedent, I'd say it's at the very least 3 years.
As I am somebody that thinks the best possible version of Fury might have a chance against anybody, you are excused for believing that. That said, I suspect that the best possible version of Fury is almost theoretical right now. Whereas we basically get the best possible version of Usyk every fight. The dude is metronomically consistent and a gym rat. That's the difference between "tyre iron Jones" and an ATG and a key reason why I thought Usyk would beat Fury.

Great stuff Rummy, as always. I think the whole case of Wladimir Klitschko being the lineal champion (and the fiasco that was Vitali's coronation by The Ring) deserves a separate video as I see time and time again claims that Wlad wasn't the lineal champion because he didn't hold all the belts.
