Kid Bacon, Michael Nunn and Roy Jones Jr were never of Marvelous Marvin Hagler's 12 title defense challengers, John The Beast Mugabi was a title challenger stopped by Hagler in 1986, TKO 10, his last successful title defense before losing to Sugar Ray Leonard on April 6 1987.

    OK. I stand corrected.
Mugabi, then. Not that he is going to stop Carlos, but maybe can grab a decision.

I initially said that Monzon would beat them all and for the most part I still think that. I’m actually very curious as to how Monzon vs Thomas Hearns would look. I think Tommy might be a tough opponent for him after thinking it over.

I think that Hearns would be a tough opponent also. But Monzon was a natural 160lb champion, he stood at 5"11 and a half, had a 76 inch reach. Hearns is over 6 ft, long reach but as in the Hagler bout, he had to grow into a 160 lb fighter from 147 lbs. Also Monzon would wear down Hearns, remember Carlos Monzon is not a short Roberto Duran, who also came up from lightweight to middleweight. Monzon did have better stamina than Hearns who appeared to wear down in the stretch. Also regardless of rumors, Monzon had a diamond chin, decked once by Rodrigo Valdes in his last successful title defense in July 1977 before retirement.

Very true. Monzon was never stopped in his career and that might be a big factor

I'd pay to watch Monzon vs Hamsho.

Both Hagler and Monzon should run the table against the other’s title opponents.
The manner in which they win could look very different, this is due to styles not a who’s better.
Carlos is less likely to stop some of Hagler’s opponents but he would comfortably outperform and outpoint them. Marvin will have good success with Carlos’s opponents, likely stopping the majority of them.
I see Carlos have the most trouble with Hearns, and oddly maybe Sibson who was good against taller guys. I think he dominates the rest. Fights the same way against Caveman Lee as he does against Duran, always his fight.
Hagler could have an Antufermo, or Duran moment and find himself out pointed by someone like Griffith but this is quite unlikely. I imagine he beats the hell out of all of them and stops most, save Briscoe, who he still outpoints.
Both of these men were long time champions for a reason, they were really good.
As an aside I am not assessing Monzon vs Leonard, as I assume it was successful defences. That being said, if I had to pick that one I think I’d say Carlos would never have done something silly like Hagler did fighting orthodox against Ray at the start, he would have done what he always did. …..

Monzon probably beats them all with the exceptions of Hearns and Leonard. Esp in 12 rd fights.
Monzon as great as he was , had a recipe he never strayed far from. That was patient, calculated, steady pressure behind a power jab and right-hand.
It's what he did. He used his height and reach extremely well, and usually bullied and beat up his better opposition ( the best were natural welterweights ) with good pressure never giving them much time to rest.
But those tactics could be an issue against Hearns and Leonard, possibly even Duran in a 12 rd fight. It would give them the time to build a lead , using their better speed, ( Leonard and Hearns) or better know how/ tactics ( Duran)
Steady pressure isn't the same as overwhelming pressure ( Think Joe Frazier/Aaron Pryor)
This would give the very best of Hagler's opposition just the room necessary to get a decision win over 12 rds.
Now over 15rds. A different story. But Leonard could still pull it off.

I think Carlos would look better then Hagler did in his defence against Duran with not a lot of drama in his reign - against Hearns it’d be a matter of time and the rest I can’t see giving him a lot of trouble including Leonard when it happened.

Monzon's technical savvy and considerable skills would stave off his end until about the tenth round when John's left - right finds its target nd gets him in trouble. Might take another couple rounds to finish it though

Marvin still had a little bit left so he was able to withstand John's attack and prevail via brutal KO but Hagler seemed to be finished after that.

Hearns would also fare well. Faster, harder, hitting, sharper

and Leonard, if he could last down the stretch, might make it close

Hamsho? Not sure if he's ready for someone of Monzon's caliber. he doesnt have John's power.

Monzon would dominate most of them.

Antuofermo was an over-achiever and I admired him. However he was also a club-footed bleeder with no punch, who went 15 rounds against the great Hagler and fought him to a draw. A fight I thought Vito won close. Vito was NOT Jake LaMotta. Marvin was supposed to bust up and get rid of him quickly which he did not. He could not have had an easier opponent to look great against to win the title from.

Monzon would have chopped up Vito easily.

Someone here thinks Mugabi would have KO'ed Monzon...???

They were both great fighters, who always stepped it up when they had to.
Id love to have seen Hagler against the prime Briscoe and Valdes, tough fights for marvellous but yeah he beats em.

Look what King Carlos Monzon did to then World Welterweight Champion Jose Mantequilla Napoles on Feb 9 1974 in Paris, France. Napoles tried to come in very aggressive against Monzon who stood at 5"11 and a half, had a 76 inch reach, weighed 160 lbs, Monzon began to figure out Napoles by round 6, punishing him with counter right hands, at one point, Napoles got spun around by a right hand and almost fell, but held on until the remainder of the round. The fight was stopped by cornerman Angelo Dundee, due to a severe cut on Napoles eyebrow. Dundee later commented that Monzon was a complete fighter, who was calm, cool and collected, Duran as great as he was, climbing up from 135 lbs, would be too small for the likes of Monzon.

I think if there had been a 168lbs title in those days Monzon rules them both at once if the politics would’ve allowed it - I think 175lbs was just too far north for King Carlos.
