You nailed a lot of these so-called boxing fans are just a fan of a popular fighter for whatever reason , fighter you don’t like does it it’s ridiculed fighter you like does it it’s glorified **** a crazy. Hatton would do okay today.
I remember, Tszyu had more trouble with Mitchell when Mitchell had a bad knee. After Tszyu destroyed Mitchell, Hatton wanted Tszyu, who was rated #3 PFP. Tszyu was so impressive vs Mitchell even i, a Hatton fan, was cocerned it might be a hurdle too high. Hatton rose to the accasion and retired the great Tszyu. Unbelievable performance.
Horrible fight. No way Hatton gets away with those tactics in any venue outside of England. As we saw in later Hatton fights, take away the mauling tactics, force Hatton to box and he comes up short. He was a good but not great fighter.
Hatton was a great fighter who left his best days behind him by the time he got to his biggest fights imo. You knew he was going places from early because he,d absolutely batter boys that we,re sent across for him. They we,re usually experienced ageing fighters. But he,d absolutely wreck them. His early career was worth watching. The big mistake they made in terms of career achievements was keeping him fighting at the same level for too long. By the time he got to america he was on the downward slide with his style of fighting and weight gains etc. Tyszu was ageing but anyone that knows anything about tyszu knows his training regime was brutal right till the end. I reckon hatton would have been right at the top of the mix if he,d have upped his competition earlier in his career anyway.
Hatton was a great fighter in an era with 2 fighters that will go down as all time greats (even if I do feel both have question marks around them regarding peds and iv bags). The problem he had was by the time he got the big fights he had far too many people around him causing issues including family. Add to that his style was too easy to get the refs to clamp down on. If cortez had let hatton work on the inside I doubt he would have won but he wouldn't have become frustrated and open.
He made Tszyu fight his fight, not the other way around. Hatton mauls you and over whelmes you, that's how he fights. Only Mayweather and Pacquiao were able to do any thing about it, former welterweight champ Senchenko pulled it off as well in his comeback fight, everybody else failed. Nobody had any idea Pacquiao was going to dominate all the top welterweights including future middleweight champion Miguel Cotto who ran it tite with Canelo. Stands to reason Pacquiao beat Hatton who was mentally shot going into the the fight when Mayweather sr brought in star amateur 154lb future champ Irislandy Lara in as a sparring partner and getting demoralized by Lara getting the better of him.
I don't entirely disagree. I see your point. In rebuttal though, I'll say nobody outside of Britain was going to let Hatton get away with those tactics. Kind of like Salido vs Lomachenko. If that fight takes place in Europe or NYC, there's no way Salido gets away with those tactics. In Hatton's fights away from home, he had a harder time because his mauling and wresting was not allowed. I like Hatton. He was an entertaining fighter with a lot of heart. I just don't rate him as high as some others as an actual boxer. I rate him as very good but not great.
I really didn't have sympothy for Tszyu who was incredibly strong and man handled fighters when needed before knocking them out. He couldn't do that with the possessed beast Hatton was that night. Although i agree, the fight was held at his favorite venue and likely his favorite ref as well. People seem to always try to steal a fighters greatest victory from them, as in the Golovkin vs Canelo fights, but there is just no way to steal this from Hatton. Tszyu was coming off a spectacular win and ranked #3 PFP at the time. Tszyu was so confident of victory that he fought Hatton at 2:00 am at his home venue because he likely thought he would catch Hatton lunging in, but he underestimated Hattons fierceness and tenacity. A spectacular win, a spectacular night over a first ballot Hall of famer. I will say this though, getting pole axed by Pacquiao really left a negative lasting impression, that is hard to shake. If Hatton had picked himself up after that loss and won some tuneups and won a relatively top level fight, the Pacquiao KO would have partially faded from our memory, kind of like the Cotto was able to come back from devastating losses. Thats what i wanted him to do, but instead he fell into depression.
