Was Kell Brook's decision to fight GGG a career ender?

Lowkey if Brook hadn't fought GGG then I think he could've beaten Spence he was actually ahead on points from memory after like 8 rounds until the eye started to effect him late on.

 

No frank Warren and the stabbing ruined Kell’s career.

Yep if he stayed at 147 I reckon he would’ve beaten Spence and Thurman at the time. He then could’ve moved to 154 and probably beaten Charlo and Hurd. I thought Brook was one of the UK’s best talents in a long time and I don’t understand why he was managed so poorly.

 

You'll be hard pushed to find a clearer case of career suicide. What were they thinking..

All the more crazy that he was ready for 154 and there were plenty of great fights for him there.

He probably could have held his own at 160 against some opponents despite being undersized. But going up against GGG was always likely to be a career ender. I'm just glad he didn't get even more hurt - I hope the ppv money was worth it!

Had vargas not priced himself out kell would have that strap to
Vargas out pricing himself with the two belts at 147 floyd would have had to take notice
And it would have tipped khan over the edge

 

His career did seem to take a serious downward trajectory after the GGG fight. It was a gusty move to jump up 2 divisions to fight arguably the biggest puncher in boxing at the time. I guess he thought he had to risk it as his career at that point was stagnating. He had tried securing big fights to step up to that next level, against guys like Khan, JMM and even a possible come back Ricky Hatton but that big fight always alluded him.

He was winning the fight against Spence before the injury. I believe he would of won that fight had he not been previously injured by GGG, but had he not gone the GGG route and then beaten Spence who then was just a top contender, he would of likely still been in the same position he was in before, unable to secure a big fight. So there's no guarantee his career would have gotten any better.

 

To me, he must not have been fully confident at154lbs to dominate the division like he would have liked to, so he cut the extra 7lbs to 147lbs, but i always got the feeling it was too much. He was so lean. I think he should have fought at 154lbs and took his chances and fought more healthy. As for the GGG fight, he did spectacular for a while creating alot of excitement for the fans and the highlight reels, but paid a heavy price for his efforts.

 

I'm almost positive that there was damage to both sides to some degree, and the hospital focused on the obviously damaged side. Brook took a heavy beating, although he was able to stay on his feet, his skull and body took a severe beating.

 

Going up 2 weights to fight the huge punching granite chinned GGG was one of the most insane decisions I've ever seen in boxing.

Boxers or their managers need to be able to invision what might happen if things don't work out as planned, but at the same time, most fighters don't want to entertain the thought of losing. Because of this fight Kell stepped out of the doldrums and into the big time, but he arrived to the big time damaged goods.

 

I think it all made his career stutter, the guy couldn’t get any decent shots with Warren then, he got with matchroom and he was their top boy at first if I remember right, before Joshua.
He got injured before he was due to fight Alexander and the fight was cancelled 3 times for various injuries.
Then he beat porter and got stabbed and still fought 6 months later and that’s ridiculous to think when you saw how bad it was.
He got his first title shot 9 years after turning pro that’s insane for a fighter of that quality.
I think he took the ggg fight because he was trying to salvage his career and legacy that he knew he deserved.
I love the guy man he’s a proper warrior
