Bummy Davis and Old Fogey make excellent points. I love his fight with Ezzard Charles; an underrated win for the latter.

Anyone read the classic Jimmy Cannon article on Charles after the Satterfield fight ? It's a great one ....

I love watching Satterfield on film. He fights with a chip on his shoulder and swings for the fences. I think Satterfield's KO% is a tad low for a big puncher, even if you only do the percentage in his prime.

I think Satterfield could hit, but putting him in an short all time punching list with Jackson or Shavers is a real reach.

...i hope seamus reads the accurate comments about bob satterfield and learns something because he doesn't know what he's talking about. ezzard charles said it was like having a safe fall on you.....whenever jake lamota's chin was discussed he always said ..."i was in there with bob satterfield...i knocked him out but he put bumps on my head. bumps!" Oakland billy smith (later boardwalk billy) wouldn't even talk about it. he didn't even know he was knocked down couple of times before the final one. he raised a bump as big as an egg on valdez, and that much bigger fighter looked amazed and spent the rest of the fight backing up and staying out of the way. all of the guys mentioned had been in with some hardest punchers around, so they had
of punchers to compare him to.

he trained mostly on the dance floors of chicago....had no stamina and a bad chin, which is why he came out winging it so hard. his losing fights have nothing to do with his punch.

He seems to have had off the charts p4p power, & hit hard even compared to modern HWs.

But in absolute power I do not think he could bang quite as hard as the biggest hiitters ever or Shavers.

I name Foster as my best power puncher in the lhvy division, but he never stopped a rated heavyweight like Satterfield did. Therefore Satterfield must be up there with best of them for power.

Probably hit as hard as anyone. A very dangerous puncher. Can't think of many sub 180 lb guys that knocked around 190-215 lb quality heavyweight contenders like he did. He reportedly put Cleveland Williams out for over a full minute.

He also had skills but he was terribly erratic. He didn't always show up meaning business. Oddly his best win was a decision over LHW great Harold Johnson.

At light heavy, near the top of the list. At heavyweight, not in the top 40.

Almost as good as his chin. If it were so, he coulda been a contenda.
